seventy ninth semi an nual conference of the church of jesus christ of Latt latter erday day saints a resolution was oddred by apostle he ile ajr her J grant and unanimous unanimously ap proved pledging its officers and mem bers hers to use every proper means to fur ther the cause of temperance to se cure the passage of such laws as may be necessary to close saloons and oth berwise decrease the sale of liquor and also pledged themselves to the support of a sunday law the resolution was as follows believing in the word and teach of president joseph F smith as set forth this morning on the subject of temperance it Is proposed that all the officers and members of the church of Latt latter erday day saints will do all in their power that can properly be done with lawmakers law makers generally to have such laws enacted by our legislature soon to be elected as may be necessary to close saloons and otherwise decrease the sale of I 1 quor and to enact the sunday law despite the inclement weather the ot attendance was large overflow meet ings being necessary to accommodate the large crowds nearly all the speakers of both sessions of the open ing day of the conference dealt with the subject of temperance as based n the revelation of the word of wie wis dom which prohibits the use of in liquors tea coffee and to bacco and which recommends the sparing ise of meats after but a brief mention of the prosperity Iro 2 ros penty which had been granted tb the church since the last conference P e dent joseph F smith devoted I 1 is address to the advocating of tern tem berance as based upon the word of wisdom and to arg ng the latter day saints to so live as to set an example to other peoples in this regard and to make their name known over the whole world as advocates of temper once he also severely cens censured urea the use of tobacco in any form president smiths counselors john R winder and anthon 11 lund who fiso 1 spoke 1 at the morning session s cu sustained stained the position taken on tern tem perance by president smith and pledged him their hearty sippora in the stand which he had taken the subject was taken up imme on the opening of the after roon oon session by apostle F M lyman who did not confine himself to speak ing against intoxicating liquors but who attacked the habit of using tea and coffee and the excessive use of meats mr lyman treated the mat ter from a financial I point of view and showed the enormous saving a g which would accrue from the discon ti nuance of the use of intoxicants tea coffee tobacco and meats apostle heber J grant also made v spirited plea against the saloons and drew a terrifying picture of the results of intemperance after he had announced that the checking of the liquor traffic was in the hands f the people whom he addressed he aged on them that they use every effort in the family circle and throughout the state to bring the traffic into dis repute and by their votes at the corn com ing election to stamp out the saloon evil which he stated is corrupting the youth of the community he then presented the resolution which re calved the sanction of the entire con terence ference the overflow meeting at the morn ing ng session was under the direction of apostle anthony ivins andaas and was ad dressed by joseph E robinson G al ellsworth EIls worth C H callis and andrew jensen in the afternoon it was nee essary to hold overflow meetings in both the assembly hall and in barratt hall the meeting at the assembly hall was in charge of bishop iverson ben E rich samuel 0 bennion and H J cannon there were fully 2 in attendance at barratt hall the meeting was in charge of joseph A mccrea nephi pratt joseph keeler and thomas B evans there were about 1500 present it is estimated that there were fully 16 people terp r ere tor for the conference at the tte evening session judge ai H H of ogden also urged that the eople of the church talk with their votes as well as with their voices against the saloons in the course of his address at the opening session president smith aid cald the lord has blessed us to a re viar kable degree during the last half year ear the lord has prospered zion and I 1 rejo ce in the man testa festa lion tion of his kindness I 1 am grateful that notwithstanding the efforts so strenuously made to injure ire the church and to bring it into disrepute these efforts have been the means of fur the work of the lord these efforts against the church have had but the effect of br aging the prominently before the world want the whole world to understand the doctrine origin and purpose the work of tl tre tle e church and this can caily be brought about by bringing the v orld into contact with our work this is i being accomplished through the attacks upon the church we want the just and understanding world to know and understand our doctrine an our works there are rone so bl nd as those abo ho will bot not see none so deaf as those who will not hear and none so heartless as those who seeing the light and the truth close their hearts against it in speaking of temperance he said there is a great movement on foot throughout the land A a aie of tern tem berance Is sweeping over the country gaining in power every day I 1 am in favor of this movement and indorse it my heart he ile then made a forceful and eloquent argument in lavor of temperance and declared that the Latt latter erday day saints being the covenant ove nant people of god should set cn c n example to other peoples and should be upright and honest living aure lives and loving and fearing god |
