Show IN RESULT RUT OF SNOWSTORM blinding storm of snow prevented engineer from seeing S geals twenty people being killed in collis on butte mont in the worst wreck in the history of the northern pa ciale railroad twenty persons were killed eleven seriously injured several fatally and about thirty more or less injured in a collision between an eastbound passenger train and a westbound freight train at a siding known as lounas point about thirty miles west of 0 billings on friday morning the fast traveling gw ger train crashed into the freight just entering on the siding during v blinding snowstorm the en edginee engl ginee nee of the passenger falling to see the signal flag of the bra brakeman keman of the freight train in time to avert the crash the freight train which was as an exceptionally heavy one left part park city with but six minutes time to make the siding it pulled partly on to the siding when the passenger was heard coming and seeing that he could not get the heavy freight train clear of the main line the en gincer sent the flagman ahead and backed out upon the main line the flagman got perhaps twice the length 0 of the passenger train up the track but owing to the heavy tog fog and tall fall ing snow the signal was not seen he threw a fuse through the cab window but the train flew by him and even this signal was evidently not noticed the passenger train which was wa running about fifty miles an hour crashed into the ti eight wrecking both locomotives and telescoping the smoker and the baggage car the smoker was reduced to kindling wood and only three persons riding therein are known to have got out ot of the wrecked car alive tle engineer and fireman of the freight saved their lives by jumping engineer beesinger Ble singer of the passenger engine saw the freight train when virtually upon it he threw on the emergency brake and made a leap for his life he ile was as practically an un injured flieman fileman babcock jumped through the cab window but his head struck the rail and his skull was crushed he died in a few moments some of the bodies of the killed were terribly mangled some of them being ground to bits so that it waa was necessary to pick them up in a blan act t when the relief train teach leached ed the brek the scene was one of a most heartrending nature many volun were engaged in taking the bleeding forms from underneath the wrecked cars the groans of the in aured and dying were most terrible many were pinned beneath the wreckage and many of those killed had been literally crushed to death |
