Show MY SMINE cashier of jordan state bank accused of the theft of from salt lake bank after a sess on covering th arty e days and elamin ng wit nesses at a cost of 1000 1 grand jury make report n cele berated case salt lake city A W nelson cashier of the jordan state bank was on tuesday indicted by the united states grand jury charged in six counts with having abstracted money from the reserve aest hest of the utah national bank on or about january 9 nelson is the cashier of the jordan state bank at bi bingham n gha in junction an institution which had close au bu iness ness relations with the utah national As s the agent of the jordan bank and alao alpo of the utah national he bad had access to the latter at all times being in pos session of the keys to the outer door and being familiar with the bombina eions of the vaults wherein were the chests containing the money stole on certain days in the month nelson transferred large sums of money from om th the utah national to the bingham bing junction bank to be used in the trans action of the general banking business of the two concerns according to the jury s findings nelson also transferred large sums of money which were not intended to be used in the conduct of the general banking bi siness of the two concerns but by nelson himself one of these sums was for another 50 and still another D the grand jury has thirty eight days on the bank robbery case during that time more than wit nesses have been examined the cost to the government will exceed 1 1000 should nelson be convicted on each of the counts and receive the max maxi mum sentence he would be imprisoned for sixty bears ears nelson himself says that il is all a mistake and that his indictment Is an outrage he protests his innocence of participation in the theft but declares that he has been made the scapegoat tor for others on january 5 it was discovered that the combination lock on the reserve chest in the utah national bank was not working properly the chest wai wa forced open by experts on january 14 and if was announced that the re serve chest had been looted the bank officials placing the loss at 43 later it was announced that the sum taken was but that the dit dif ference beav between een this sum and 43 had been made up by some of the chief stockholders A number of the employed emp loyes of the bank have been un der suspicion but the detectives em aloyed had failed to make out a casa case against any one the grand jury be gan its investigation on april 22 took a recess from may 16 to june 16 and brought in the indictment against nel son on june 30 nelson upon being arrested filed a bond of 10 for his appearance be fore the federal court on november 1 |
