How about unbeatable? Since a Nov 1 loss at Colorado State the Cougars (28-5- ) have won eight straight matches all in three games Their next obstacle comes Thursday against Texas A&M But BYU has already swept the Aggies in August 8 15-1- 1 9 — — — — — — —it i— ) ju-uyi- — JOE BAIRP THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE fifth-plac- 0 level-heade- Level-headed- & L—s i I Danny LaThe Salt Lake Tribune BYU's Helen Hjorth loft puts up a strong defense in front of Minnesota's Heather Baxter in NCAA volleyball 7T—— Utes Making Strong Pitch for Top 10 See BYU Page C-- 3 — r— IIYMIAKHliM Utah State Slips Past San Diego State New Mexico Falls to UCLA in Wooden Classic Utah's Hansen Misses Out on Being Rhodes Scholar TIIK HALT IAKK TKIHUNE WINSTON SAII'IM N C — Top 10 meet the University of Utah Andre Miller Mlt luM'l Dolenc and the Utes validated a likely Invitation to mlli'iti luiNkctbaH's esteemed fraternity Sntuntiiy with (in tiutliorltiitive victory over Wake Koi rM Miller xcoi oil 1 1 iif hi 20 points in the final nine minuted nn lltli runlti'il Utah Improved to Wake Km cut If) I ) nhnt 211 percent — its worst marks- C-- 6 C-- 8 He wiped out Wake Forest's last lead with a layup that made it 40-4with 8:59 remaining Seconds later he fed Hansen for a three-poin- t play that put Utah ahead for good k With 4:32 left he scored baskets With 1:45 left he went inside for a basket that made it 9 and put Utah in position to ice its victory from the foul line "I was just trying to push the ball and keep them back on their heels" Miller said "The more I pushed it the more things seemed to open up" Once again Coach Rick Majerus loved Utah's defense Wake Forest made only 14 of its 50 shots including a in the second dismal Still Majerus knew that Miller provided the offensive spark the Utes needed "Andre very much so is developing confidence" Majerus said "He's becoming an extension of the coaching staff and taking our game plan onto the floor He's really coming into his own" Doleac also had a big outing especially considering fouls limited him to seven minutes in the first half 0 62-5- 3 back-to-bac- 7-- 0 manship miii'K 1U7 "We liiht In h lii'lli-- C-- 3 55-4- tmnkt'ttmll team" said Demon Deacon Couch IIuvp Oil'im " Utah has an awful lot of Inlonl ami ywit niiiimsiment" Nine Itilli) Wiikf had ton 57-- against oppmii'iitx In Joel I'ollNcum In the last five years Aliunde i'mml ('unfiTt'iim teams had gone 15 0 against their little brother friun the distant WAC Then mine Miller Tlmfl "Anilr look over" nld Utah center Michael Doleac Saul I H ew IUiim'ii "He wanted the ball He's the type He's of fiiiy who wiinlt I lu bull with two minutes left uniiii i mill Itiutili That i why we has so much confidence In him " Allhoiitih iluiiini Mottota finished with 16 points and 10 relmumi — mnl even though Doleac contributed 14 minutes — point Mint Ri'Vt'ii ri'hoiinrfg In 24 Miller wiu tin key r 2 Bob Levrrnne The Associated Presn Hanno Mottola center and the Utah Utes scrambled past Tony Rutland and Wake Forest 62-5- 3 Saturday foul-plague- d C-- 3 See UTES Page C-- 8 THE BOTTOM LINE- -
