It’s a chance to sit at home and relax while you think deep thoughts about the contributions of organized labor to protecting the rights of workers—you know, the same way you think deep thoughts about civil rights on Martin Luther King’s birthday, or about great leadership on Presidents’ Day. TOMES SWEET TOMES Friends of the Park City Library Used Book Sale, Sept. 4 - 6 There’s nothing that gives a soul greater pleasure than donating to a worthy cause— unless it’s the idea of being able to clear your house of stuff you were going to throw, away while donating to a worthy cause. And better still is getting an incredible bar- gain for a worthy cause. Those opportunities present themselves this weekend when the Friends of the Park City Library hold their 15th annual Used Book Sale in the Jim Santy Auditorium. The sale actually begins Friday, with a preview sale for F.P.C.L. members only; those who can’t bear the thought of missing out on that special book can purchase memberships at the door for the 5 p.m.-8 p.m. event, and enjoy light refreshments as they browse. The rest of the general public will have to wait until Saturday, when thou- sands of books go on sale for the incredible low, low price of $1 for hardcovers and 50 cents for softcovers (sorry, antique and rare editions will be priced accordingly). They've got children’s books, they’ve got romances, they’ve got how-to’s. Come on down, everything must go! No comments about pig-tailed girls drinking hot chocolate. No cracks about how the security staff will be armed with corkscrews and awls on their pocket-knives. And certainly no tired gags about how it will be held on a neutral site this year. You see, such ignorant comments are all about the silly, stereotypical visions called to mind when one thinks of the word “Swiss,” which is as ideal a reason as any to support the cultural education that will take place in Midway Friday and Saturday. You can delight in authentic tunes by the Salzburger Echo Alpine Band, enjoy the dancing of the Mountain Valley Cloggers and Echo Mountain Performing Troupe, and thrill to the Swiss handbell-ringing of the Swiss Handbell Ringers. You can even re-live the adventures of history’s best-known apple-slicing Swiss archer during a performance of The Legend of William Tell, or plop the kids in front of the “Heidi” puppet ~ show.
