And in that long process, the state of Utah will pay a Salt Lake City law firm more than $126,000 for 22 months of work because one of Andrews’ 15 attorneys is now appeyes by the state. In that brief mailed Friday, state attorneys say since Andrews first ap- pealed his sentence, 16-year-old the condemned death killer has had 15 lawyers represent him in at least a dozen legal proceedings in what now amounts to an abuse of the appeals process. Currently, six lawyers are representing Andrews, including Mr. Ford, who has handled Andrews’ ap- peals since 1978. Andrews now has 14 days to file an option response to the state’s briefs. The case is to be argued sometime between Jan. 14 and Jan. 18. Andrews was sentenced to die for the 1974 torture and shooting deaths of three people during a robbery at Ogden’s Hi Fi Shop. Two survived. Pierre Dale Selby, who admitted fir- ing the fatal shots, was executed in August 1987 at the Utah State Prison. Testimony showed Andrews helped Selby administer doses of caustic liquid Drano.
