Bradley says that Wilder, like other governors who visit Los Angeles, is welcoffie. ‘*Those who are seeking to bring our motion picture industry into their states to shoot —if there’s a natural setting, an appropriate one— I welcome that,”’ Bradley said. ‘“‘We don’t fear any state or its competition. We think we have the finest and most attractive places for them to shoot their films.” Wilder’s West Coast visit comes on the heels of a White House meeting with President Bush, where he was critical of the Bush administration for failing to spend surpluses in the Federal EXTENDED FINAL WEEK @ ACT NOW @ LIMITED QUANTITIES veneeterentcerere ecerecee’ votetetetateretete aneeeta yrs teteterereceneees: OR Transportation Fund to reduce the na- mere eratatetetstetets tional deficit, and at the same time con- sidering a proposal In his opinion, the ing from both sides told him that when Washington. to increase taxes. Turn the highway fund and the aviation fund loose.’ Those funds are taxpayers’ dollars and should be returned directly to us before any consideration of any additional taxes,”’ Wilder said. ‘“By withholding such monies from the states the federal government is not only admitting its own fiscal irresponsibilities, it is likewise getting the ability of this nation to be competitive in the world economy.”’ Wilder says the Reagan and Bush administrations are responsible for a budget deficit and an entire process that is out of control. ‘*The taxpayers —not the culprits— are having to pay the price of the savings and loan scandal. Many political observers contend that Wilder, by virtue of his election in Virginia, has become heir-apparent the role of.....national..black displacing Jesse “Jackson leader} ’sj¢ who: is.-.|. ~ credited with holding that position for the past eight years. Wilder disagrees. “There isn’t any single voice commanding the loyalty of blacks,’’ Wilder siad, ‘‘and there isn’t going to be.”’ Political analysts also say that Jackson missed a golden opportunity to position himself for national office when he opted not to run for mayor of Washington, D.C. Wilder indicated that describing Jackson’s decision as ‘missing a golden opportunity’’ might be an overstatement. “‘Jesse Jackson is a young man. He has any number of opportunities to show his waves,” Wilder said: ‘‘I do know, however, that XPERIENCE there will always be a question arising, when anyone is running for an office, as to track record and account ability.”’ Although Wilder did not entirely rule out a future in which he would seek a national elective office, he says it is much too soon for such speculation. He says there is too much to do in the state of Virginia to be concerned about anything else at this point. Wilder outlined what he has so far achieved as Virginia’s chief executive, as well as the work he has in front of him. He and the Virginia Legislature, he says, have succeeded in establishing a “‘Rainy Day’’ fund, while eliminating a $1 billion state budget deficit. He says he was also able to reduce the sales tax on non-prescription drugs. He says in the immediate future he will be trying to deal with the drug pro‘problem, education, and the state’s rural economy. He plans to next year in an effort to business investment in ‘“These are the things travel abroad attract foreign Virginia. I’m interested in,’’ Wilder said. ‘“We can’t determine what’s going to happen in the future. To the extent that I can establish the best record I possibly can as governor, that’s what will determine my future course.”” : Another of Governor Wilder’s plans during his Los Angeles visit was to go the Academy Awards show, but what might be described as an untimely part in his honor, attended by former President and Mrs. Reagan, prevented him from going. ““My entourage went to the Osears,’’ Wilder said. ‘‘I had to watch it on television like I would have done if I was in Richmond.’’ At West One Bank, our staff doesn’t just live in this community.
