Commissioner Shimizu was appointed in 1981 to the Salt Lake County Board of Commissioners and oversaw the Department of Human Services for four years. Re-elected by wide margins in 1982, 1984, and 1988, Commissioner Shimizu sees the 1990 election as critical to the direction Salt Lake County will take not only in the 90’s but in preparing for the next century. ““As I look to the next century, I have cause for great optimism. We live in an exciting time. As a community, we are just beginning to appreciate what we have to offer to the world. I am confident that the course we have charted will lead to increased job opportunities, a cleaner environment, and a valley we can be proud of.’’ Commissioner Shimizu was born in Los Angeles, California but at the age of eight his family moved back to Utah TOM SHIMIZU where he spent the remainder. of his early years. A graduate of Jordan High School, he later attended the Universi- ty of Utah where he received a B.S. degree in civil engineering. Commissioner Shimizu is also a veteran of the United States Army and served in Korea from 1953 to 1955. Commissioner Shimizu is active in religious and community service. He served as a mission president in Japan for the LDS Church from 1971 to 1974. He is currently a member of the Utah Economic Development Board of Trustees, Salt Lake Winter Games Organizing Committee, World Senior Games Board of Trustees, University of Utah Civil Engineering Advisory Board, Salt Lake Area Red Cross Board, Work Activity Center Board of Directors, and the Sugarhouse Park Authority Board of Trustees. Commissioner Shimizu and his wife, Junko are the proud parents of four sons. |
