Since 1972 Ogden Valley Pathways and Weber Pathways have issued an updated map of trails and bike routes in Ogden Valley and Weber County. While our deep snow pack may keep us from hiking and biking, most of the trails in the area are suitable for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. The updated map includes five new trails, three of which are in Ogden Valley: Wolf Creek Canyon Trail (3 miles one way; level of difficulty is “moderate”)— This access road leads to the controversial 160-acre parcel once owned by Rulon Jones. It’s now back in public ownership, but the land on either side is still private property. Take the upper road where it forks about 200 yards past the trailhead. Expect a moderate but steady uphill climb as you ascend the canyon through groves of oak, maple, aspen, and fir. This trail is suitable for snow-shoeing. The trailhead is at mile 8.2 on the highway to Powder Mountain, just past the gates used to close the road. Winter’s Grove Nature Trails (0.4 and 0.5 miles; level of difficulty is “easy”)— These trails are named after Jens and Mamie Winter, who established a small resort and picnic grove here. One of the trails is an old campground loop, and the other is the old highway into Huntsville. With enough snow on the ground, these trails are suitable for snow-shoeing. The trailhead is on 7450 East, near the entrance to the Jefferson Hunt Campground. Old Trappers Loop Road (2 miles one way; level of difficulty is “moderate”)— Before the construction of the new Trappers Loop Highway, the old Trappers Loop Road was the main connection between Ogden Valley and Morgan County. Mountain men who came to trap beaver in the local streams used the route in the early 1800s. By going up Weber or Ogden Canyon, traversing the hills here, and going down the other canyon, they could travel in a “loop” that returned them to the site of present-day Ogden. Today the road is closed at the summit, but it’s still a pleasant hike with some of the prettiest views in the Valley. The road is open to walkers, but the land on either side is private. The trailhead is at 7450 East Highway 39, just east of the Jackson Fork Inn. Cross-country ski trails identified on the map include North Fork Park and Pineview West Trail. Both of these trails are groomed for cross-country skiing in the winter: Pineview West Trail (3.1 miles one way; level of difficulty is “easy”)—Pineview West Trail, dedicated on National Trails Day, June 3, 2000, is a leisurely and scenic walk along the reservoir’s shore. The trailhead is “North Arm Trailhead, located on Highway 158 between Eden and Pineview Reservoir. North Fork Park Trail (3.3 miles one way; level of difficulty is “easy”)—In the summer, this trail is actually a road serving one of the most beautiful and extensive parks in Weber County. In the winter, the road is closed to traffic and becomes a great place to cross-country ski. The trailhead is at the south entrance of North Fork Park. The Ogden Valley trail map is available free at any one the area businesses that sponsor its printing. Locally, these are Diamond Peak, at 2429 North Highway 158; or The Oaks, at 750 Ogden Canyon Road. So please, stop by either one and pick up your copy, and enjoy the outdoors! February’s Meeting of Ogden Valley Pathways The next meeting of the Ogden Valley Pathways will be held Wednesday, February 4, at 7:00 p.m. at the Ogden Valley Library. The main item on the agenda for February’s meeting is an update on County efforts to enact ordinances for developing and maintaining non-motorized trails in Ogden Valley. In addition to providing an update, we’ll let you know what you can do to help promote more trails in the area for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. For more information, contact Geoff Ellis at 393-2304, or Helene Liebman at 745-1799. We hope to see you on the February 4! FUNDRAISER cont. from page 1 Pathways. With today’s encroaching urban environment and demanding lifestyles, the need for human exposure to the natural world is greater than ever, Neill said. “The trail network will ensure and support this. We Believe access to trails as spectacular as the ones we have now, along with the expanded network we envision for the future, enhances healthy lifestyles for Weber County residents. These trails can also have economic benefits by being a great attraction to visitors.” Current projects being coordinated by Weber Pathways include developing the Bonneville Shoreline Trail northwards toward Box Elder County. When completed, this section of trail will add seven miles of trail for bikers, hikers, and equestrians. In addition, efforts are being made to extend the Bonneville Shoreline Trail south to Weber Canyon, to secure a trail route and wildlife habitat on the Weber River, and to pave the Eden Trail from Snowcrest Junior High to the North Arm Trailhead. Tickets for the event are $50, $75, or $100. Early reservations are encouraged. Call 393-2304 to place your reservation.
