About a year ago, the County began considering alternatives to the current number of townships. At the public hearing held on January 13, about 30 residents from Weber County attended, many voicing their concerns over losing their township commissions. One idea discussed at the meeting was to reorganize the six townships into two—a lower Valley and an upper Valley township. After a review of comments from the public hearing, and a report from legal council, the County Commission will make a decision regarding the organization of the county’s townships. Burton stated that a decision should be made within the next two months. State code states that one member of a seven member township planning commission may be a registered voter residing outside of the township if that member is an owner of real property located within the township and resides within the county in which the township is located. Each appointee is to be chosen by the township planning commission from a list of three persons submitted by the county commissioners. In addition, the county is to enact an ordinance that provides for the election of at least three members of the planning commission of the township. The election of planning commission members is to coincide with the election of other county officers during even-numbered years. To Say Nothing of the Dog Readin’ in Eden, a community based reading group, will hold their next meeting at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Kathleen Peterson, located at 3643 N. Elkridge in the Elkridge Subdivision in Eden. The book to be discussed is To Say Nothing of the Dog. To Say Nothing of the Dog is a time travel story by Connie Willis, author of the award-winning novelette “Fire Watch” and the award-winning novel Doomsday Book. The book has been described as a screwball comedy set in the time of Jerome K. Jerome’s classic late Victorian comedy, Three Men in a Boat. Willis seems to be saying, if this is a screwball comedy, darn it, I can have implausible plot points, and outrageous coincidences, and my tone can be as goofy as I want. But a funny thing, so to speak, happened on the way to Coventry, and this novel turns out to have a serious and moving center to it after all, albeit in the context of a generally very funny book. What’s more, Willis’ point derives nicely from her story’s outrageous coincidences, almost too overtly so, as if the book points at its faults and says “I meant it that way.” The book is described as funny, romantic, and intelligent. Most readers find it highly engaging, unable to put it down once they’ve picked it up. Come and join in, or just listen to the lively discussion for an interesting evening. Guests are also invited to bring their used books to exchange. If you plan to attend, please RSVP Kathleen at 745-0396. The Readin’ in Eden reading group is an open forum for adults of all ages. Deadline for material for the February 15 OVN issue is February 4. Inspirational Thought Sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then, be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the forms of kings to govern him? Let history answer this question.
