Obituaries Beverly Alice Saville Montgomery HUNTSVILLE - Beverly Alice Saville Grow Montgomery “our Granny Goose,” 87, passed away at the home of one of her daughters, January 9, 2004 of natural causes, surrounded by her children. She was born August 7, 1917 in Salt Lake City, the daughter of Harry Martin Saville and Alice Christina Jensen. On November 15, 1935 she married Eldon Arthur Grow in the Salt Lake Temple. Eldon passed away July 3, 1941. On December 10, 1943 she married Leland James Montgomery. He passed away August 15, 1972. She was a faithful member of the Middle Fork Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she enjoyed serving in many callings in the auxiliaries of the church. She was a volunteer for McKay- Dee Hospital until November of 2003, serving 33 years. She was also a member of the American Business Women’s Association. For 25 years she was a member of the Wildcat Club of Weber State University and a Judge of Elections for several years. Granny was always busy with her hands making many gifts for her friends and family. She is survived by her 11 children; Jean Wangsgard, Elenore (Raymond) Jones, Norman (Joyce) Montgomery, Charlene Grover, LeeAnn (Mark) Fuller, Anita (Glaydon) Ferrin, Judy (Bob) Poll, Fran (John) Oliver, Neva (Ross) Wangsgard, Rhea (Bryan) Schade, Dennis (Kathy) Montgomery. She is also survived by 51 grandchildren, 170 great-grandchildren, 34 great-great- grandchildren and 2 great-greatgreat- grandchildren. She is survived by a sister, Marjorie Brunker; her April Sister, Lorie Fuerst; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, brothers Virgil and Marvin, sisters Violet and Roma, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the faithful home teachers and visiting teachers for their diligent and caring visits. Thank you to Dr. Glen Biddulph, McKay-Dee Hospital staff and volunteers, and the I.H.C. Hospice Team for their wonderful service to her. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 13 at 11:00 a.m. at the Huntsville Stake Center, 6450 East 1900 North, Eden, Utah. Interment, the Huntsville Cemetery. Helen Mar McEntire Slater Glenda Green MARRIOTT/SLATERVILLE CITY Helen Mar McEntire Slater passed away peacefully in her sleep Sunday, January 11, 2004 at her home in Slaterville after spending the evening playing games with her daughter Deanna and her son- in-law, Roger. She was born in Huntsville, Utah on May 17, 1915, the fourth child of William Rawson McEntire and Rosene Woodfield. She attended school in Huntsville through the ninth grade and graduated from Weber High School in 1933. She continued her education at Weber College receiving a teaching certificate in 1935 and later went back to school to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree from Utah State University. Altogether, she taught school for 19 years and was loved and respected by her students, many of whom still recognized her these many years later. She served a short-term mission to the Western States Mission in 1937. The Church at that time was sending teachers on missions for their three-month summer vacation. She married Arnold I. Slater on September 2, 1938 in the Salt Lake Temple. She and Arnie spent their entire married life in Slaterville where he was a dairy farmer and school bus driver. They enjoyed traveling with family and friends. They were both very actively involved in church work. She held many positions on both the ward and stake levels, and supported Arnie when he served as Bishop, Stake Patriarch, and Temple Sealer. She loved her Family Home Evening group, which consisted of Arthur, Wendell, Thora, Dolores Slater, and June Meyerhoffer. She is survived by her four children, Judy (Melburn) McKell, Lancaster, CA; Deanna (Roger) Hart, Ogden; Stephen (Marilyn) Slater, Slaterville; Kim (Dorothy) Slater, Slaterville; 28 grandchildren, and 75 greatgrandchildren. Also surviving is her sister Virginia Stallings, and her brothers Jay and Don McEntire. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, her sister Laura Hawks, and brother Ross McEntire. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 16, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Slaterville Ward Chapel, 250 North 1500 West, with President Val Currie officiating. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery. Send condolences to family at www.myers-mortuary.com OGDEN - On January 14, 2004, Glenda Lyman Green waltzed into the spirit world to meet her Mom, Dad, brother, husband, and many dear friends, including Shirley, Maggie, and Beulah; and lots of treasured pets. She was born August 17, 1923, in Lehi, Utah to Millie Naoma Noble and James Acy Lyman. She was reared in Wendover, Utah, and spent 62 years there raising a family. She worked as Postmaster for 25 years. Prior to that she enjoyed waitressing. In 1941 she graduated from Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. After graduating, she joined her brother Doyle for a brief time and worked in the fish house in Ketchikan, Alaska. Returning to Wendover she was hired for the war. During the war she worked in Washington, D.C. for the War Department where she was lauded as a speed typist. She returned to Wendover Field and worked there as secretary to the adjutant general. She married Marion Clayton Green in 1942, and he left a few weeks later for the war in the South Pacific with the U.S. Marines. She didn’t see him until his return five years later. When he returned they started having children: Marion, Malin, Pokie (Marie) and Goldie. She enjoyed the activities in Wendover with the kids, and especially liked attending the basketball games and the events sponsored by the American Legion and the Lions. Her husband Clayton passed away in 1965 leaving her to finish raising four children alone. She excelled at the task and loved and supported them throughout her life. She retired as the Postmaster in Wendover in 1986 and moved to Ogden Canyon where she lived the past 17 years. She enjoyed many wonderful trips with her daughter, Pokie, to New Zealand, Australia, Tahiti, Peru, Hawaii, Mexico, Alaska, and many places stateside. Glenda loved Hawaii and the music, flowers, and peoples of Hawaii. She enjoyed four trips to Mexico in which she came to love the mercados, mariachis, and fiestas with the Mexicans. Glenda was a quiet power who directed her family in ways she hoped would create integrity and support creativity. She loved animals and always had a dog or cat friend close at hand. She recently had three of her dear poodle pups cross over, and they were probably joyful at the great reunion. Glenda is survived by her kids: Marion and Malin of Woods Cross; Pokie (Marie), of Ogden; and Goldie and Nancy of Wendover. She greatly appreciated her borrowed daughters, Deola (Dee) Perry, Lark Muir, Shanna Jackson, and Starr Finch, who made her Ogden life pleasurable. Her grandchildren include Shannon, Jarrod, Amity, Clayton, Zak, Ashley, Sara, Cecilia, Ace, and Jusice. Send condolences to family at www.myers-mortuary.com Byrne “Elliott” Strother OGDEN VALLEY - Byrne “Elliott” Strother passed away Monday, December 22, 2003 after suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, with his loving wife of 50 years by his side and the sounds of a harpist at his bedside, ushering him to his Heavenly Father. Elliott was born August 21, 1929 in Del Rio, Texas, son of William Oscar and Bertha Elliott Strother, the second of three children. He attended Brackenridge High School in San Antonio, received a Bachelor of Science degree at Texas Tech University and a Masters in Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M. Elliott then went into Officers Training for the Air Force in Waco, Texas. He graduated from OTS and married Shirley Ballard May 12, 1953. Elliott was in Training and Fighter Squadrons during his first nine years in the Air Force and then Space and Missile Systems Division for the remainder of his career. Elliott and his family were stationed in Texas, Alaska, Oregon, Utah, and California. He retired from the Air Force in 1974 reaching the rank of Lt. Col. He then worked in the Pasadena area of California for C.F. Braun Engineering for ten years. During that time, Elliott and Shirley bought run down apartment buildings and renovated them until they moved to Ogden Valley in 1997. Elliott and his family were active members of the United Methodist Church for over 40 years.
