Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume VIII Issue VII Page 7 July 15, 2003 One Voice on the Family Announcements By Janet K. Cazier Obituaries Thomas Ford Shirley Thomas Ford Shirley, born August 12, 1949, died July 2, 2003 at his home of natural causes. Tom was born in San Diego, California to Merle and Clara Shirley. He attended Mission Bay High School in Pacific Beach, California, where he was an avid golfer and weight lifter. Tom was married to Teresa Ortiz 19741985. They had one son whom he loved, admired, and respected, Travis Anthony Ortiz Shirley. He is so proud of you, Travis. He married Martha Thompson in 1992. Although they divorced, they remained best friends. Tom worked for the U.S. Postal Service where he always said he had a good friend he was able to call Boss, Ryan Burnett. Thank you Ryan, for being the man that you are. Tom is survived by his son, Travis, his best friend Martha Thompson; former wife, Teresa; a step son Steven (Billie) Thompson; two step daughters, Peggy Patten and Tami Thompson; and the apples of his eyes, three grandchildren: Steven Thompson, Tristin Martin, and Cayla Wayne Patten. Trips to McDonalds will never be the same without our “PaPa Tom.” Friends and family held a celebration of Tom’s life at the Ben Lomond Golf Course on July 11, 2003 at 6:30 p.m. The other day I was visiting my son’s grave. There I was thinking how lucky I was to have had him for my son for the 24 years he was in my life. I was standing there with the sunshine on my face, listening to the birds chirping and the breeze rustling through the trees. Every sensation I could experience seemed to be filled with something lovely. As I looked around, colors were vibrant— green grass, blue lake and sky, white clouds—all of nature seemed to be happy. I thought about how grief stricken I was when Cody died, but now I could smile and be happy once again. I thought of how dark the darks had been, as the day before when the pouring rain had kept me inside. How gloomy those days could have been if I had decided to let them be. I knew that the color I was now seeing was a result of the former rains, just as I knew the joy I was feeling this day was the result of the many tough times that have transpired in my life. I probably couldn’t appreciate the things I now appreciate if I hadn’t lost my son. Today I relish all the time I enjoy with other people. How I plan to enjoy every day of my life is a direct result of those dark days. I thought of how I was so glad that when clouds had come into my life, that I hadn’t chose to stay indoors forever. Instead, I chose to come out and enjoy what the rains had left behind. If when a dark cloud comes and we go inside and choose to stay there, we will never see that the sun comes out again. During light rains, you can even stay outside and enjoy doing so. I realize that there are some dark clouds that bring hail, and we have to step out of the elements for awhile because the pounding of the hail hurts so much. But as soon as the hail stops, come out! The destruction wrought by he hail will be there for awhile, but soon our surrounding will overcome the damage, and things will be bright again. Nothing is wrong with grief, disappointment, or sadness. Just mentally choose to change those emotions as soon as you are emotionally ready. You can’t walk on a broken foot and expect it to get better, and emotionally you can’t expect to smile away your grief, disappointment, or sadness. But as these emotions subside, let positive emotions take their place. Allowing happiness into your life again is a decision. This month, see how much joy you can fill your life with—I think it may surprise you. NEW LISTING 3632 N. Foothill Lane Eagle Ridge NEW LISTING Lot # 38 Durfee Creek 3632 N.
