Don’t worry—the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) is coming to you! The Grand Opening of A Smithsonian Exhibit in Utah – “Key Ingredients: America by Food” is slated for July 4 at the Weber County Library – Ogden Valley Branch, 131 S 7400 E, Huntsville. You are what you eat—how you eat, where you eat, and when you eat, too! Key Ingredients delves into the historical, regional, and social traditions that merge in everyday meals and celebrations at the American table. Food is central to culture. Culture is central to identity. The exhibition is created by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The Utah tour is presented by the Utah Humanities Council with financial support from the George S. and Dolores Dore’ Eccles Foundation, Wells Fargo, and the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies. Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service brings the finest treasures from the Smithsonian’s vast collections to communities across the nation. With 16 museums, a zoo, and international research centers at our disposal, not to mention strong relationships with scholars and curators at other institutions, SITES is never at a loss for diverse and intriguing exhibits. Since 1952, SITES has brought the nation’s treasures to thousands of communities from coast to coast. One of the Smithsonian’s four National Programs, SITES exhibitions delight and educate audiences about everything under the sun, from fine art to endangered species, from politics to jazz. By bringing the Smithsonian directly to the places where you live, work, and play, SITES connects Americans to their shared cultural heritage. The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC has more than 142 million objects, and can display fewer than 2% of those at any given time. The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) plays an integral role in bringing more of these national treasures to thousands of communities from coast to coast. Currently, SITES is touring over 60 exhibitions covering the arts, sciences and the humanities. The exhibit will run at the Ogden Valley Library in Huntsville from July 4 through August 16. Are you moving? Is it too hot to have your own garage sale? Is the D.I. too far away? Then donate your items to this year’s 5th Annual Charity Garage Sale in Huntsville. All of the proceeds go directly to three local charities: The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Utah, Ogden Regional Labor and Delivery Bereavement Foundation, and McKay Dee Labor and Delivery Bereavement Foundation. The proceeds will be donated to these causes in memory of several local Valley infants and children who have passed away. The leftover items will be donated to the YCC, a center for abused women and children, and the Deseret Industries. The garage sale will be held Friday, July 11 and Saturday, July 12 at 9520 East 400 South in Huntsville. It will run from 8:00 a.m. to about 6:00 p.m. Last year over 70 families donated items. This year’s garage sale is expected to be much larger, with items already being donated such as furniture, sports equipment, clothing in great condition, shoes and boots, craft items, bridal florals and items, dishes, appliances, seasonal decorations, toys, games, and books. It is hoped that this year’s sale will beat last year’s total amount of $2500. The goal for this year is at least $3000 for the local charities. The garage sale is made possible by donations of items. If you would like to support this great cause with your own donation, please contact Elizabeth Stitt at 745-4012. She will come and pick it up your donated items for you. And don’t forget to come and buy something too! Mark July 11 and 12 on the calendar, and we’ll see you there. Just follow the signs to a great sale for a good cause! Subscriptions available for out of area residents at $18.00 annually.
