Barber Family Says Thank You The Bill and Janice Barber family, in behalf of our son Scott, wish to thank all the volunteers who aided in the search for our grandson Andrew in the Nordic Valley area. We are grateful to the sheriff’s department, search and rescue, and those of the fire department who set up the command post for the search. We especially thank the group of young people who found and kept hold of Andrew until a unit could pick him up high up the ski run. Sincerely, The Barber Family, Nordic Valley Sixth Graders Thank Ogden Valley Pathways The 6th grade would like to thank Ogden Valley Pathways for allowing us to come on one of the trails, and for teaching us trail manners. We would like to thank Mr. Ludvigsen and Mr. Ed Radford for taking us on the trail. Scot and Lisa McGonegal, Mrs. Brandt and her dog Duke also came along to help us. Rita Booth, Emma the dog, others from Pathways, and many parents helped make this a wonderful experience! “ I wish we had done this earlier this year because it was so much fun!” said Veronica Urbik when she was getting on the bus to go back to Valley Elementary. Other comments included: Natalie Rich, “It wasn’t only fun, it was educational!” Ty Robins, “ The different kinds of bugs were interesting!” Duke the dog barked, “It’s hot under my thick black coat! How great that we are so close to the water!” Thanks Pathways! You change lives for the better! Carlee Morse, Valley Elementary Sixth Grader UDOT Report The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) advises motorists of the following road work: June 11-12 20th Street will be restricted to one lane for a quarter-mile segment west of Wall Avenue in Ogden from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily for lane leveling. June 11 - Late July Rehabilitation project scheduled to begin Wednesday on the Weber River bridge on Interstate 84 just west of the U.S. 89 interchange in South Weber. The WB I-84 onramp from U.S. 89 will be closed and motorists will be detoured to South Weber Drive. I-84 will be restricted to one lane in each direction in the vicinity of the bridge. Motorists should expect delays in the vicinity of the U.S. 89 / I-84 interchange and are advised to use alternate routes. J.D. McNeil Construction has been awarded the $187,000 construction contract. UDOT advises motorists to reduce speeds and use caution when driving through work zones. Construction schedules are subject to change due to inclement weather conditions, equipment problems or emergency situations. Inspirational Thought “Once the mind has been stretched by a new idea, it will never again return to its original size.” — Oliver Wendell Holmes Deadline for material for the July 1 OVN issue is June 18. Information on Dyers Woad Causes Frustration In an effort to help out, the OGDEN VALLEY NEWS recently printed a news story about kids getting paid to pull weeds without verifying its accuracy. I assume that you just took the information from the StandardExaminer, as I was not contacted by your staff about the details of this bounty program. What has resulted from that article being available at distribution points for weeks is distasteful. The official guidelines specifically pointed out when to sign for the official collection bags and when to turn them in (http://www.co.weber.ut.us/weeds/ ). We had a grant for $5,000.00 and had to control the outgoing bags so as not to exceed the grant. Because your paper, with outdated news, is available for a couple of weeks or more, we have logged 103 calls since the handout days ended on May 15. Yes, we get paid to answer the phone, but hopes were dashed needlessly! You made no mention of the limited supply or the specific dates to receive them. What is worse, others who knew nothing of the rules about official bags and counts, worked hard digging weeds and received only a “thank you” from us as the grant was exhausted. Just today, a Huntsville group brought in 1600 pounds of dyer’s woad anticipating the cash bounty, and had to be told that they had worked for nothing. Granted, their leaders would have been wise to confirm the story first, but they did not. These kids will be disappointed tonight, and the only upside is perhaps a lesson in life when money is involved. Two things now, please never take a story and run it without first checking it out. Second, is there a gentle reader who might have the funds available to pay off some great kids for their efforts? Such a follow-up grant would be most rewarding to this group who did nothing wrong other than put their cart in front of the horse. Many thanks.
