Ben is one of ten students who were chosen from about 23 5-A high school golfers from across the state of Utah who were nominated by their school leaders to vie for the exclusive honor. Jon has been on Weber High School’s Golf Team for three years, first playing in his sophomore year. Students are selected on the basis of golfing ability, GPA, test scores, and other academic pursuits. Jon is the son of Lisa and Scott Olson of Eden, and Tom and Patti Garrison of Ogden. Lady Skyhawk Softball Team Winds Up Another Season Jazz Update By Jen Beasley Student Reporter As long as I’ve been watching the Utah Jazz play basketball, I’ve heard the same complaint from folks nearby: “The Jazz never make any changes.” Well lookout. They’re making up for it this year. Remember watching Bryon Russell? Donyell Marshall? Quincy Lewis? Chances are you won’t be doing much of that anymore, unless you follow basketball in Washington, Chicago, or Israel. John Crotty’s gone. Rusty LaRue is gone. One whole string of players, vanished from the team. And to replace them, Carlos Arroyo. (Who?) Ok, Calbert Cheaney. (Come again?) Relative unknowns that put the season and the sportswriters in limbo until the action starts and we can all see for ourselves what to expect. The acquisition of swingman Matt Harpring from Philadelphia was an excellent move. Harpring averages 10 point per game, but more importantly, possesses a lot of great instincts on the floor. Any player who can make an impact that shines through the bullheadedness of Allen Iverson is something special, and ultimately we’ll forget Bryon Russell. Calbert Cheaney is rumored to be a decent back-up two guard, but my hopes aren’t high for anyone who’s been in the league for a few years and still remains anonymous. The Jazz also acquired Mark Jackson, which would have been a gem of a deal five years ago, but now is only so-so. Jackson, a fifteen-year veteran, while smart, is definitely on his last legs and will therefore assume more of a lockerroom-leadership role than make a major on-the- court impact. However, he is an extremely competent backup for John Stockton, and with Spanish rookie Raul Lopez possibly out for the season with his torn ACL, it’s nice to have someone who’s better than iffy. Speaking of injuries, rookie Curtis Borchardt will be out for the early part of the season with a stress fracture in his foot. Oh yeah, and Andrei Kirilenko is underweight and still gimpy on one ankle from a sprain sustained in the Rocky Mountain Revue, which causes additional concern about potential injuries for Jazz management. It’s little wonder then, that the Jazz did so much revamping in the off-season when one considers that the three players Larry Miller was most expecting to hand the franchise to are now question marks of various sizes at the beginning of the season. If they’re dropping like flies, you gotta send in more flies. Returning to the Jazz this year are John Amaechi, Jarron Collins, Greg Ostertag, Deshawn Stevenson, Scott Padgett, Kirilenko, and of course John Stockton and Karl Malone, which will bring some leverage to the roster. The beginning of the season—if not the entire thing-however, will be a roller coaster like no other. With so many new players learning the system, along with so many variables such as the return of the injured warriors, it’s certainly a rebuilding year. We’re rebuilding the future: the ankles of the future, the knees of the future, the feet of the future. Which means that the 40-yearold legs of the past and present are just going to have to suck it up. Questions? Comments? Feel free to email me at FanJazzer@aol.com. 2580 N.
