If we all did the things we are really capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves. — Thomas Edison Letters to the Editor Wake Up. Let’s ALL Wake Up! Kathy to Be Remembered for Since being assigned the Health and Taking Care of Our Children Safety Commissioner for the Weber High PTSA, I have become genuinely interested and alarmed to find that bad things really do happen to good people. Children are being abducted from their homes and schools, or even walking to a friend’s house. We are teaching our children to say “no,” “tell mommy or someone you trust,” “don’t talk to strangers,” etc. SCREAM! As adults, we seem to expect children to protect themselves, but the fact is, when it comes to the safety of children—OUR CHILDREN—it is our responsibility, as parents and adults, to watch—keeping eyes and ears open at all times—out for our children. Recently at the Ogden Valley Library, a well-publicized seminar was presented by the Weber County Sheriff’s Department. The seminar was held to help parents become aware of some of the dangers threatening our children, and local child safety issues. The Sheriff’s Department recommended safety procedures for protecting our children. Unfortunately, less than ten residents of this Valley found time to come and learn from this well presented and informative seminar! While writing an article for the Weber High Warrior Newsletter, I contacted the Northern Utah division of Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC). This organization, opened less than a month ago, has already reported ten arrests—count them, ten arrests in less than a month! Who are they arresting? Predators, adult predators who are attempting to set up personal meetings with minor children (some less than 13 years old) on the Internet. These predators are skilled manipulators, tracking our children in chat rooms, and by whatever other means the Internet affords them. ICAC sets up sting operations on the Internet, and even only working part-time— because of limited resources—they are making arrests. An officer called ICAC the following morning inquiring if my article had been turned in yet to the Weber newsletter. She reported happily that another arrest had been made the night before. This time the predator was a police officer after a young boy. Hurray for ICAC! At this rate, the organization is hoping to make an arrest each day. So predators . . . beware—YOU WILL BE CAUGHT! In my opinion, the more information parents have, the better armed we are to protect our children. For more information on child safety issues, look for future seminars being set up by Weber High PTSA sponsored “Angel Watch.” Our first seminar will be at Weber High School, October 16, at 7:00 p.m. in the library. The guest speaker will be Weber County Sheriff Lt. Rod Layton. The topic will be, “ICAC, a Parent’s Guide to Internet Safety.” Look for a seminar on Substance Abuse on November 4, and additional seminars in following months. Get involved with Angel Watch, whose motto is, “Stand Up – Speak Up – Be Heard.” For more information, call me at 7454131. Jamie Hawkes, PTSA Health and Safety Commissioner and Concerned Mom Eden While Kathy’s death has, unfortunately, left us with a feeling of sadness, let us rejoice in her work here with our children, and take the time to thank the many others, who like her, care for our children/students every single day they ride that school bus. Take the time to remember her, and to thank your children’s driver for their participation in your child’s school experience. Good-bye Kathy. We’ll miss you. Working on the yearbook staff, Snowcrest students have the unique opportunity of taking their own pictures and using the school’s dark room facilities to develop and print their photographs for yearbook layouts. Bur our present equipment is wearing out after many years of use. We need to replace several 35 mm cameras and flash attachments. In addition, the trend is moving toward digital photography, and we have a funding need so digital equipment can be purchased. The school is accepting donations in any amount to help us update equipment for the yearbook program. We will acknowledge all who donate in our 2002-2003 yearbook. Please contact Jennifer Sorensen or Sharon Beddes (Yearbook Advisors) at the school if you can help. Please call 745-2608. She will be remembered for many things, I’m sure, but should be remembered by most of us as the caretaker of our children. Schoolteacher’s have their classrooms and curriculum, but our bus drivers have their “classrooms” too, and I know Kathy taught her students well. Long ago, I recall her singing to me the song that students learn in order to remember their states and capitals. She said she sang it with the students on the bus. I remember my children—even though they did not ride her bus—talking of her, and about how the kids liked her so. YOU KNOW IT’S GOING TO GET COLD AND SOONER THAN YOU WANT! The deadline for 2002 issue is Just recently, a longtime resident of our valley was killed in a tragic traffic accident. As an acquaintance, I remember her as one being in the category of “always having an opinion and always willing to share it,” which made a person remember her point of view, and respect her in many ways. She had a quick wit and strong heart—but most of all, I remember her as having my trust in transporting students to and from our schools. www.travelhaus.com Randy Laub Owner 10 West Broadway Suite 712 Salt Lake City, UT 84101 email: travelhaus@aol.com Specializing in “Palm Tree” Destinations Smaller Agency - Bigger Service!! |
