Muffy Davis Takes Home the Silver Compiled by Jeannie Wendell Ogden Valley News Staff Winning is the norm for Muffy Davis, who has raced almost all of her life. Davis grew up in Sun Valley, Idaho and began skiing at the age of three, and started racing at age seven. Her parents loved to ski, and so the dye was cast. At only sixteen, she broke her back in a skiing accident, but she didn’t let that get her down. She began skiing in the Disabled World Cup in 1995, and moved to Park City to train. Muffy Davis, now 30 years old, is a Women’s Alpine mono-skier. She races in the LW10 class, which means: “Athletes with disabilities in lower limbs, no functional sitting balance. Athletes with Cerebral Palsy with disabilities in all four limbs.” The head coach for her U.S. team is Ewald Zirbisegger. Davis has an impressive record. She was a 1998 Paralympic Bronze Medallist in the Slalom in Nagano, and took 6th in the Super-G. She was a Gold Medallist in the Giant Slalom at the 2000 World Championships, and took 5th in the DAVIS cont. on page 4 Valley Pharmacy Open for Business The Valley Pharmacy is now open. The state parks recommended for closure are: Fort Buenaventura State Park, Ogden Millsite State Park, Ferron Jordan River State Park, Salt Lake City Minersville State Park, Beaver Jordan River Golf Course, Salt Lake City Otter Creek/Piute State Parks, Antimony Recommendations also include eliminating the boating/off-highway vehicle position at Pineview Reservoir, and placing Pineview operations under management of Willard Bay State Park. Though Pineview is managed by the USDA Forest Service, Utah State Parks provides boating law enforcement and education. If closed, the positions of ten Utah State Park employees are in peril. Nelson stated the agency would do its best to place employees in vacancies within the Division and similar organizations. The number of applications already received indicates that the event will be much bigger than last year’s event. Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas. Teams of people are needed to staff aid stations along the route, which will wind through Ogden Valley and down through Ogden Canyon to its final destination in Ogden City. Being a station volunteer involves, not only pouring drinks and handing them to runners, but more importantly, cheering for the runners! Valley Elementary wished all of the Paralympic athletes good luck in a rousing send-off Friday, March 8. Under the organization of Mrs. Christine Hirst, helium tanks were gathered, and volunteers filled enough balloons for every child to send one flying. America First Credit Union generously donated all of the red, white, and blue balloons. Students gathered in front of the school to watch Valley’s rendition of a torch relay. As the relay was run, the students joined in singing two songs from the Olympic program. The last leg of the relay was run by Otto the Otter, the Paralympic mascot. Otto lit the cauldron, and afterwards, the students repeated a pledge to stay drug free. Mr. Larsen counted down and, as the balloons were sent flying, the students let out a deafening yell of “GOOD LUCK PARALYMPIANS!” It was an exciting event. To top it off, Otto made a personal visit to each classroom in the school. Valley Elementary would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped with Olympic activities. Because of them, Valley school has been an exciting place to be for the last few weeks. Paralympian mascot Otto the Otter. |
