By Jen Beasley Student Reporter Karl Malone knew to beware the Ides of March. After scoring only three points while playing with the flu in a loss versus Charlotte, the Mailman decided to sit out the next game March 15 versus Detroit. It was the first time he’d missed a game for a reason other than suspension since 1989. But he was pretty much the only one who noticed. Rookie forward Andrei Kirilenko took Malone’s place in the starting lineup and tore up the second-in-the-East Pistons, scoring a career-high 27 points, with 20 of those coming in the first half. The Czar also posted career-highs in minutes played (44) and field goals made (11), along with 9 rebounds to round out his numbers. When asked about his performance he said, “We knew that with Karl out, everyone on the team had to play over the top. He’s our leader on offense and our leader on defense. But this was a big game, and we really needed to win it.” Why’s that? “I want to play in the NBA playoffs,” he said. Kirilenko’s offensive and defensive capabilities have become more and more visible throughout the course of the season, largely due to the confidence gained in him during his increased playing time when Donyell Marshall went out with a bruised hip. He has blossomed into a main option on offensive plays, become a defensive presence with his high-flying blocks and quick steals, and though he won’t receive Rookie of the Year honors, he’s bound to pick up a few well-deserved votes. The reason is obvious. At just 20 years old, Andrei Kirilenko has gone from being an obscure foreign rookie to ranking in the top 20 in 7 major NBA categories, including 12th in blocked shots, 13th in blocks per game, and 9th in blocks per 48 minutes. His rankings are doubly impressive when compared only to other first-years, where he places in the top 10 in 12 of the categories. He also leads the Jazz in blocked shots, and is 6th in scoring with his 10.2 points per game. But there’s more to Kirilenko than statistics. His popularity flares mainly from his hustle, his finesse, and his unpredictability. It’s because of these things that he has quickly become a fan favorite. He plays hard, he says, because he loves the game, and because there is something that he wants. He wants to play beyond April. And if he puts up more performances like the one against Detroit, he certainly will. Questions? Comments? Feel free to email me at FanJazzer@aol.com.
