A Time For Reflection By Janet Hoffmann I would like to express my sadness for the terrorist acts that were carried out in New York and Washington D.C. It was devastating to most of us. I think about how I felt on that tragic Tuesday, September 11, and can’t imagine how those who were even closer to the horror must have felt. There are so many people hurting. Many lost more than one loved one. It would be very difficult to have so many losses all at once, and having most of your loved ones around you also dealing with their own losses. When I lost my son, I had emotionally strong people around me to comfort and help me. But those who comprise the support system of many of those who lost loved ones, are also in mourning. Why would anyone do something so vile? I heard one man say that the ones that were responsible for this tragedy did it because of their religious beliefs, and that they considered themselves martyrs. I have a hard time thinking of any of the perpetrators as martyrs. A martyr is a person who chooses to suffer death rather than renounce his or her religion or beliefs. This is not the case in this situation. The people who were innocently killed are the martyrs. Evil cannot be regarded as religion. Corruption hiding under the guise of religion is double evil. Religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, and often has a moral code for the conduct of human affairs, thus evil acts could not be considered religious by any means. Our nation has been assaulted by evil. Since the attack on the United States, we have stood up and pulled together as Americans. As a great nation, we are reminded to be ever so thankful for the freedoms we enjoy. Since terrorist acts are deemed as evil, and evil is something most of us desire to be rid of, it follows that many desire to have the guilty killed, wiping away this evil. But there is more to it than this. There is something each of us can and must do to rid our nation of evil. We must try harder to live moral lives. This would help rid the nation of evil and, in turn, make a better world for all of us to live in. I hope and pray that each of us will look inside ourselves to find what we can do to change our individual hearts for the good, thus impacting ourselves, our families, communities, the nation, and our global community. In this way we can all do our part in ridding the world of evil. I love America! God bless America. Canning PLLC By Jeff Salisbury First of all, I’m sure you have taken some time to mourn for the people who died in the recent U.S. terrorist attack, and your thoughts and prayers have gone out for their families and friends. It’s an emotional time for everyone. It is a time to reflect on how grateful we are to be alive. It’s also natural for our thoughts to turn inward and wonder, “What about me and the people I love? What about the people who count on me? How is all of this going to affect my money, my stock-market investments, and my future?” When we are considering our fears due to the events around us, it’s often good to step back and put our current situation in perspective. Let’s consider the following: On Friday, July 8, 1932, for one day only in this century, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) recorded an intra-day low of 40! Yes, I’m rounding to the decimal point; the precise number is 40.56. But for purposes of the broad sweep of investing history it was 40! As of the day this article was written, the DJIA closed at 8759. Now, 8759 is almost 220 times 40. In other words, $1 invested in 1932 would be worth $220 today. That is a remarkable return on investment by any standard. However, what is even more remarkable is that the 70 years in question are, by many important measures, the worst 70-year period in human history. If you doubt this, try to remember another seven decades marked by a larger global economic depression, followed by a larger global hot war (in which about 55 million people lost their lives). Then top it off with a global cold war that threatened the planet with extinction, enslaved about a third of the earth’s population, and diverted heaven knows what percentage of the world’s wealth and human ingenuity into the black hole of defense! And during this protracted global ice age, the DJIA went from 40 to 8759! Now that capitalism and free-enterprise are the organizing principles of most of the human activity on the planet, you may well wonder, as I do, what’s going to happen now that things are pretty good (despite the terrorist attack). It may be speculation, but let’s stay with what we know. We know that the DJIA went from 40 to 8759 during the worst 70 years in history, and we have reason to think that (economically at least) things are tending to get better rather than worse. I conclude from this that the greatest risk of stock market investments remains today, just what is has always been—not YOUR MONEY cont. on page 10 Subscriptions available for out of area residents at $18.00 annually.
