Show Volume IV, Issue VII THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 3 July 15, 2001 Hearthside Owners Host Open House By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Staff The Martins On July 4, the Dave and Ruth Martin family hosted an open house, inviting guests to visit the Hearthside, a beautiful and historic reception center nestled in the shadows of the Wasatch Mountains in beautiful Ogden Valley. What was once Eden’s quaint country chapel, rich in both history and charm, now boasts being the Valley’s oldest standing structure. The open house provided an opportunity for the Martins to showcase the many improvements made to the facility, and to visit with neighbors and friends. Complementary refreshments were served to guests. Built in 1896 and completed in time for Christmas of the same year, the old Eden chapel served the small mountain valley community of Eden for many years. A recreation hall was added in 1929, maintaining the same Victorian design of arches and spires. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, the original owners, sold the building around 1973, not long before a new chapel was dedicated in Eden in 1976. The Scott Larkin family bought the property from the church and remodeled the building, adding living quarters for their family. The Larkins also ran a wedding and reception business on site, first using the name the Hearthside. They ran the business until about 1991, then sold the historic building to Marge and Gale Armstrong who owned it until the Martins purchased the property in June of 1992. It was closed during this interim. Currently, the Hearthside also doubles as the family home of Dave and Ruth Martin and their five children Ben, Leah, Cam, Jacob, and Kate. The Martins recently added a magical garden courtyard and dining area which greet guests. Once inside, visitors to the Hearthside find the same Victorian charm found on the outside, adorning the interior of the building, welcoming all who pass over its threshold. The Hearthside tradition continues with a lovely chapel area, bride’s room, foyer, and cultural and dining area that The Hearthside Chapel as it stands today. will seat about 200 guests at one time. refreshments, and accessory food items to The Hearthside has not only been used for choose from. weddings and receptions, but also for The Martins are now in the middle of wedding breakfasts, family reunions, plans to open soon, a four-bedroom bed leadership conferences, retreats, church and breakfast with a large kitchen area services, plays and shows, and even auc- available for guests. tions.
