Letters to the Editor Neighbor to Neighbor My father and I recently moved to the Valley. I am a widow and my dad is disabled. As a young girl camping, and through my adult life, we would drive up here to camp or just to go for a ride. I often commented on how great it would be to live in such a picturesque place, always thinking it would be out of my realm. A lovely lady named Penny Starks showed me and my dad that we could live here. The place we bought needed a lot of love and work, as someone had literally dumped garbage in the back . . . truckloads of it! I couldn’t imagine junking up such a beautiful piece of God’s landscape. I was out front trying to make a little flower garden when a front-end loader—a “grand” gray haired lady driving—pulled up, introduced herself, and said, “We’ve come to welcome you to our Valley, and to help you clean up.” Off she went to the back. Behind her, her husband, just freshly losing his leg to surgery, came with a dump truck. And still yet, behind them were 15 or 20 people who were my neighbors, all packing gloves, muscles, and “weed whackers.” I was speechless, to say the least. I felt like crying on the spot. I felt like I had been whisked back in time 50 years, or more, ago. I believe in my lifetime I have had one neighbor ever offer to help me. (That’s the city for you.) I can’t remember all those people who helped us. But would like to thank them all for it, and for the privilege of being their neighbor, and sharing this breathtaking beauty God has loaned us few fortunate people here in what we all call the Valley. A sincere thank you. Sharry L. Ewing E. M. Broby Liberty, Utah Resident Encourages Neighbors to Clean-up their Junk I am glad Weber County has enacted an ordinance restricting abandoned vehicles, etc. on private property. I truly hope they enforce this ordinance. As a resident of Ogden Valley, I am amazed at the lack of pride many residents of the Valley have in their land— it is not unusual to see three or four abandoned cars, trailers, boats, and farm equipment, etc. on someone’s property. If we are so concerned with preserving the beauty of this Valley, I think we need to start in our own backyard, so to speak. In February the world is coming and, for heaven’s sake, we don’t want to look like a bunch of backward folk who don’t know where to put their trash! Kathy Murphy-Feldkamp Liberty, Utah Editor’s Note: Residents concerned about excessive junk and debris, and abandoned vehicles in their neighborhood can contact Kevin Hamilton at the Weber County Planning Office at 399-8766. Public Workshops Planned for Ogden River Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan Two Open-house/Public Workshops have been planned to receive public input on a Draft Corridor Management Plan for the Ogden River Scenic Byway (Highway 39 from the Interstate 15 to the eastern WasatchCache Forest boundary, including Highway 166 around Pineview Reservoir). The workshops will be held Wednesday, July 18 and Thursday, July 19. The workshops will be held at the Graycliff Lodge in Ogden Canyon, and at the Ogden Valley Library in Huntsville. The public may attend anytime between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. The Golden Spike Empire Travel Region is hosting the open-house style public workshops. The purpose of the second of two planned public workshops is to receive public input on the content of the Draft Plan. Information in the plan includes: 1) Byway Organization Plan, 2) Public Participation Plan, 3) Resource and Intrinsic Qualities Assessment, 4) Intrinsic Resources Management Strategy, 5) Highway Safety and Signage Strategies, 6) Tourism and Marketing Plan, 7) Interpretation Plan, 8) Multilingual Strategy, and 9) Strategy and Action Plan. Several members of the project team will be available to answer questions and to receive public input. Copies of the Draft Plan will be available for review at the Weber County Library and the Ogden Valley Library beginning July 9. Alternatively, you can download a copy of the draft plan off the web at www.ogdencvb.org. Don’t miss this opportunity to comment on recommended techniques for maintaining and enhancing the scenic, recreational, cultural, archaeological, historical, and natural resource qualities along this unique byway! The Ogden Scenic Calendar is the very first of its kind. It is a fond, commemorative effort to truly capture the spirit of dear old Ogden City and the greater Ogden area. It features the vibrant and vivid photography of our famous local artist, Valerie Taylor, a native Ogdenite who has dedicated over a decade to the preservation and promotion of Utah’s rich history and heritage. Mrs. Taylor will be autographing her splendid collector’s calendars on the Promenade of Rainbow Gardens on July 14, in conjunction with Rainbow’s “Heritage of Utah Cooking” event, as we honor our host, Ogden city, with a full day of signature Utah flavor! The deadline for material for the August 1st issue is July 18th.
