Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 8 Volume IV, Issue VI July 1, 2001 DERBY cont. from page 1 were made by the parents of the Boy Scouts. The specs on the cars were derived from the Boy Scout manual. Parents of the Boy Scout dens worked together to construct the cars. Fr. Charles Cummins donated and provided a set of pneumatic wheels for all the cars at a cost of $20 for each car. “Truly his impetus,” said Deana Froerer. Contestants couldn’t “doll” up their Fr. Charles Cummins stands with soapbox drivers at the top of the course. car, but they could make their helmets fancy. The helmet competition was also Fr. Cummins idea. Because no one had ever done this above Salt Lake City before, lots of challenges had to be overcome before the event could take place. Ski Lake Corporation gave the church permission to block off the road in Huntsville next to St. Florence Church. A special permit had to be obtained to close the road for the event, along with other obstacles such as deciding the course and the rules and design specification. Each contestant had two chances to ride—one on each side of the two-lane track, with the winner being the fastest of the two runs combined in their age category. There were 28 volunteers who signed up to help. Cub Scout parents Tokie and Howard Skylar were on hand, along with other parents, most from the St. Florence Parrish. Soap box winners were: Overall First Place: Dale Pohly Second Place: Kelsey James Third Place: TommyHarris Girls Age 7-8 First Place: Meg Baker Second Place: Melissa Frogh Girls Age 9-12 First Place: Megan Brandt Second Place: Elizabeth Baker Third Place: Macey Truett Boys Age 7-8 First Place: Christian Daugaard Second Place: Ben Palmer Third Place: D.J. Cummins said, “It was nice to see parents involved with their children, that’s what keeps the community strong.” Becky Daugaard said, “It was awesome. It was nice to see the community getting involved, and families bonding with fathers on Father’s Day. They did a great job for the first annual soapbox derby. I am so glad they didn’t start up higher. Thank goodness for the hay bales to stop them.” Thanks to Deana Froerer and all the volunteers who made the event a great success. A special thanks to Snowbasin and Jack B. Parsons for the netting and fencing. Also, Interstate barricade for the traffic cones and Haynes Fuller for his bales of hay.
