It involves them directly in historical and archeological research projects all over the United States. Excavation, historic structure reconstruction, oral interview programs, and Native American rock art recording are just some of the projects that folks have made possible. These projects generally last from a few days to a month, and all the training necessary to do the work is learned on the project. The program is also unique in that there is no fee for the participant. PIT is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service. It was started in 1989 as a response to people’s deep interest in, and commitment to, preserving and understanding American History. That level of interest in remarkable! The following statistics illustrate how much people care about making a difference: Since the program began in 1989 . . . There have been over 800 different PIT projects across the U.S. Over 14,000 volunteers of all ages have participated These volunteers have con tributed over 275 person-years of labor The dollar value of this donated labor is over $7,000,000! This year the Utah National Forests are hosting 12 PIT projects. They include the Ogden Canyon Lime Kiln Restoration on the Wasatch Cache National Forest, the Reeves Excavation of ancient sites on the Ashley National Forest, and Restoring a Mobile Ranger Station on the Fishlake National Forest. These projects offer an authentic and very personal way to get to know Utah’s History—and to contribute to its preservation for the future. Animal Services Designed to Help Pets and Pet Owners Exciting things have recently taken place within Weber County Animal Services. In the last year the county has opened a new animal shelter. The county built a large and modern building that can house both dogs and cats. The shelter also has the ability to house large animals such as cows and horses. The shelter has received many positive comments from both the public and those working within the Animal Services department. In fact, it has been said that Weber County has one of the best shelters in the state. Along with building a new shelter, the county started an adoption program that has been a great success. Each week we find more and more homes for dogs and cats that have been brought to the shelter. For animals that, for one reason or another, just can’t seem to be adopted, there are rescue groups who will take the animals and find them homes. Each week in the newspaper you will see one of our animals featured as the pet of the week. This has been a very successful program for Animal Services. Our goal at the shelter is to be a service and not just a pound. There are many ways that you can help. Here are a few suggestions. Of all the complaints Animal Services receives, the most common is that of dogs running loose. Dogs are required to be on a leash whenever they are off their property. Dogs and cats are great pets, but not when they are in someone else’s yard, flower garden, or in with livestock. Just because you may live in a rural area, doesn’t give pet owners the right to let their animals roam. Another problem, when dogs roam they may become lost or, in many cases, hit by cars. Either scenario is detrimental to the animal. Another problem seen by Animal Services—pet owners failing to license their dogs. The reason pets are licensed is twofold. First, if we find and catch your animal running loose, and we find that it is licensed, we can usually return the animal to you that same day. Animal services tries to return all licensed animals that are picked up roaming. If it is a first time offense, there is usually no charge for the service. The second reason that we require dogs to be licensed is to ensure that the animal is current on its rabies vaccinations. Because of strict rabies enforcement, rabies within the state of Utah has all but disappeared. By licensing your animal you help protect everybody, and also the animal itself. Thank you Valley residents for all of your help and cooperation. Our goal is to be of service to you and your animals.
