Many may not recognize its historical significance and its commitment to the community. Since Raymond and Janice Yoak took over operations of the ranch ten years ago, they have been working hard to restore and preserve the ranch. They have also become dedicated to giving back to the community by donating resources and hosting numerous charity events. One of Janice’s favorite events is the Ride for Life in which “special children with special needs” are invited up to the ranch for a day of winter fun. Snowmobile, wagon and sleigh rides are popular activities for a day at the ranch. While on a snowmobile ride, the kids will often tap you on the back and say “faster - faster,” said Janice. “It brings tears to your eyes to see them so happy.” Red Rock, the Golden Spike Snowmobile Club, and the Weber County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue jointly sponsor this event at the ranch each year. Another memorable event was when the ranch hosted a visit by a group of Bosnian children orphaned by war. Janice, a former schoolteacher, said the interaction with the horses was very therapeutic for the children. On Christmas Eve Day, Primary Children’s Hospital brings children who don’t have a place to go for Christmas to the ranch. They enjoy a day of snowmobile and sleigh rides, followed by a hot meal. After hosting an event, the ranch often receives thank you notes from the children. The simple notes are proudly displayed on a wall in the café. “Being up here is a lot of work, those are the rewards,” said Janice of the notes and the children. Red Rock is deeply committed to the Weber County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue. Staff members at Red Rock, who are old enough, become certified for winter searches. Because of the ranch’s location, they are often the first ones on the scene to search for a missing person—usually a snowmobiler. During a search the ranch and café is open 24 hours a day serving free meals to the volunteers. Most recently, Red Rock reached out in support of Eden’s balloon festival and served a Dutch oven dinner to a group of 150 pilots and their crew. They host about three different Mountain Men Rendezvous throughout the year, each raising money for a different charity. The rendezvous is a reenactment of the 1840s, complete with teepees and activities ranging from a frying pan toss to a Dutch oven cook-off. Proceeds from the annual Red Rock Rendezvous go right back into building and preserving the ranch. RANCH cont’d on page 4 The lowering of Pineview Reservoir always makes for some interesting finds. This summer the Weber County Sheriff’s Department has cleared five auto theft cases with the discovery of five previously submerged vehicles, four in Pineview and one in Causey. Two of the vehicles had been reported missing since 1997, one since 1998, and two since 1999. Among the many finds were a 1990’s model Blazer, a Grand Prix, Toyota Pickup, and a Ford Thunderbird. The cars had previously been decomposing under twenty to thirty feet of water. The Sheriff’s Department works with the State Parks Police. A towing cable is usually obtained from the Star Route Garage in Huntsville. The cable is then attached to the rusted vehicle from a Parks’ boat and dragged to the edge of the reservoir. From there it is towed up the bank and hauled to the Star Route Garage. A serial number or license plate number usually allows for identification of the vehicle. At this point the insurance company, who usually has ownership of the vehicle, is then notified. The cars currently identified were stolen from Layton, Roy, Brigham City, and the Ogden area. The vehicle found in Causey Reservoir still had a golf club wedged between the seat and the gas pedal, the means of acceleration into the water. An officer with the Weber County Sheriff’s Department says that he expects that more vehicles will probably be discovered this year as the level of the reservoir continues to drop.
