Show Volume I , Issue XI Page 23 The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS August 1999 Plans Being Made for Private School in the Valley Morrie and Christine Mau have submitted plans for a Private School to Huntsville Town, and are awaiting approval for a zoning change that would allow the school to operate in a residential area. The Maus are hoping to open the Valley Academy later this year, a private school that will educate children between the ages of 5 and 14. The proposed school will be a new 4500 square foot custom home that has already been constructed for this purpose. The home is located at 6844 E. 200 N. in Huntsville Town. The Director for Valley Academy will be Meshelle Smith, who graduated from BYU with a degree in elementary education with an emphasis in English. She has two children of her own that she plans on enrolling in the school. Mrs. Smith is currently teaching at Mound Fort Middle School. The owners of the school, Morrie and Christine, along with Mrs. Smith, will focus the school’s attention on learning, not grades. Also, levels of learning and understanding will be measurements not grade levels. Foreign languages will also be emphasized as part of the curriculum. Math, Science, and History will be studied in depth. Reading will be one of the School’s passions. The school will also require that parents volunteer as a teacher’s assistant for one or two days a month. A large part of the success of the school will be related to the teacher student ratios–one teacher and their assistant to every 15 students. The school also plans to provide outside experiences, taking the classes on the road to visit museums, plays, and service/research trips. The school will also emphasize the teaching of technology, life skills, and moral character, such as honesty, integrity, commitment and kindness. The plan before the Huntsville Town outlines the request for a private school that will have four classes with a maximum of 15 students in each class. The Mau’s hope to have approval from the Town Council before November of this year. They would like to begin classes in the same month. The cost for children to attend Valley Academy will be in line with other private schools in the Ogden and Salt Lake area. The school is currently interviewing for teachers, and is looking for businesses and/or individuals who may be interested in providing scholarships. TO THE PEOPLE OF WEBER COUNTY REGARDING THE STATE TAX COMMISISON CORRECTIVE ACTION ORDER ISSUED TO THE WEBER COUNTY ASSESSOR This year, property values are being factored in accordance with a ‘Corrective Action Order’ issued by the Utah State Tax Commission on November 4, 1998, to be implemented on the 1999 assessment rolls. The intention of a ‘Corrective Action Order’ is to equalize the tax burden with current and equitable property values. Comparing current market sales with the Assessor’s values, the State determined that land values are low in Ogden Valley and Ogden Canyon by 15%. Improvement values west of Interstate 15 that are north of 3300 South and South and West of the Roy city limits are low by 14%. The 1999 ‘Valuation Notice’ you receive in August from the Weber County Auditor will reflect the necessary adjustment to these properties. If you disagree with the total value on your ‘Valuation Notice,’ please note the appeal application deadline. The Assessor can help with any questions or concerns by calling 399-8572. Thank you Cheryl Madson Weber County Assessor The Mau’s request that interested parents, volunteers, etc., contact them at 801-745-3230.
