From fresh-baked Coming from the People to People program created by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1953, the annual HOF Germanfest aims to bring people together and celebrate the connection between the sister cities of Ogden, Utah and Hof, Germany. Today this is the oldest and most successful sister city partnership in the program. In 1986 the Ogden sister city committee created a new winter festival that would be known as the Hof Winter Carnival (later to be known as the HOF Germanfest) to honor the sister city partnership. This great tradition lives on and continues to be a wonderful winter event in Weber County. The 2020 Sneddon HOF Germanfest will take place January 17 thru January 18, 2020 at Weber County’s Golden Spike Event Center (GSEC) inside the heated Exhibit Hall at the GSEC. HOF Germanfest is considered Utah’s Premier Winter Family Fun Event and continues to be the most outstanding family German themed festivals in Utah. Outstanding German bands from California and Utah will perform on a professional stage along with Folk Dancers who will be performing German-styled dances. The festival also features authentic German foods such as Weiner Schnitzel, Bratwurst, and Knockwurst. This concert is sponsored by Ogden Regional Medical Center, and is a celebration of American Heart Month, which is February of each year. The concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. at Ogden’s Historic Peery’s Egyptian Theater, 2415 Washington Blvd., and it’s always one of the highlights of the orchestra season. This year five works for orchestra will be performed, including two with members of the orchestra who were chosen to perform as soloists. The concert will open with The Overture to “Dei Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss Jr. Die Fledermaus translates as “The Bat,” however, rest assured that no bats were harmed in the opera. In fact there are no bats in it at all except for the character Falke. Look up a synopsis of the opera for more information at <www.metopera.org/user-information/ synopses-archive/die-fledermaus> Next up will be Prometheus Rapture (Seven Legends for Snare Drum and Orchestra) by Sean Beeson. The soloist on this is percussionist Matthew Kinney, who will play several of the movements. The piece was written for Dame Evelyn Glennie, who gave the world premiere. Moving to music from Russia next presented will be Igor Stravinsky’s set of very short pieces titled Suite No. 2 for Small Orchestra. These pieces are lively and in spite of the time period in which Stravinsky wrote them, quite tonal. Carl Maria von Weber wrote his wellknown Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor in 1811. It’s since become a staple of the clarinet repertoire. The orchestra’s clarinetist Shawn Berry will perform the first movement of the concerto with the orchestra. Closing out the program will be Georges Bizet’s exciting Carmen Suite No. 1. After Bizet’s death, a close friend compiled this suite and the Suite No. 2 from Bizet’s best-known opera “Carmen.” The suite ends with the rousing Les Toréadors. Tickets for this concert are $8, and are available by phone at 801-689-8700 or in person at the Egyptian Theater box office Monday thru Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased online at <https:// smithstix.com/music/all-music/classical-orch/ event/23159/chamber-orchestra-ogden-jan-25> As always, active military, veterans, and their families are admitted without charge to all COO concerts, as are music students ages 8-18. OFOAM is proud to present the 4th-annual snOwFOAM to provide the city of Ogden and OFOAM sponsors and supporters with another unforgettable music experience. “OFOAM added a winter concert, snOwFOAM, several years ago to fill the void left by Sundance Film Festival leaving Ogden in late January. OFOAM has a mission to influence youth to play traditional instruments and we are proud to offer progressive presentations to our local high school music and drama students. Amy Helm was chosen as our 2020 snOwFOAM artist for her compelling songwriting and stage presentation. snOwFOAM is also an excellent opportunity to gather support for the upcoming year(s) and thank our sponsors for past successes. Please join us!” Michelle Tanner OFOAM Executive Director Amy Helm sought what she calls a “circular sound” for her most recent album, “This Too Shall Light.” It’s a well-rounded one, marked by streaks of Americana, country, blues, and gospel, and the kinds of four-part harmonies that can burst open a melody and close the loop of an octave. And sentimentally, it’s a sound that represents the feeling of community. Because of this, Helm and her acoustic trio are the perfect artists and musicians OFOAM can bring to Ogden to say thank you to the community and its sponsors and supporters. OFOAM’s 4th-annual snOwFOAM will be held Friday, January 24 at 7:00 p.m. at The Monarch, located at 455 25th St in Ogden. Tickets are on sale now on Eventbrite https:// bit.ly/2Rmbf8e.
