Brian Saunders sang the national anthem at the Energy Solutions Arena on January 13 before the start of a Jazz game against the Denver Nuggets. He was one of forty people chosen to sing throughout the basketball season from almost 300 contestants. Brian is married to Brooke Buttars and now lives in Huntsville—her hometown. He is the son of Ed and Katie Saunders (Saunders Construction) of Harrisville and son-in-law of Alan and Willow Buttars, lifelong Huntsville residents. Brian’s incredible voice, highlighted by an a cappella performance, filled the huge arena and brought deafening cheers from the audience at the conclusion of the anthem. Brian and Brooke’s aunt, Beck Woods, also of Huntsville, stated, “I am sure that Brian’s phenomenal singing that evening created the positive vibrations that propelled the Jazz to a victory over the Nuggets!” Fly Fishing Film Tour Kicks off Adopt-A-River Program for Ogden City’s River Restoration Program The annual Fly Fishing Film Tour premiering in Ogden on March 7 at Peery’s Egyptian Theater is more than a fish tale for outdoor enthusiasts, anglers, and recreationalists. The event will promote the restoration of the Ogden River by launching Ogden City’s Adopt-A-River Program. “Patterned after AdoptA-Highway, Ogden City’s Adopt-A-River will educate and encourage the citizens of our community to take ownership and pride in a specific stretch of river by adopting, maintaining, and beautifying the waterway’s banks,” said Ogden City’s Public Services Deputy Director Justin Anderson. “The monies raised from the Fly Fishing Film Tour will be used to support the adoption program by furnishing groups with the materials necessary to help maintain their stretch of river, such as planting materials and mulch, and providing garbage bags to dispose of weeds and other debris. “ FLY FISHING cont. on page 8 My Closet Clothing Tanning Salon & Gifts Escape to the Bahama’s Come relax and experience the glow. Weber Pathways has submitted an application to the RAMP committee of Weber County requesting about $56,000 to go towards the next ½ mile of trail. This will bring the trail to the Pelican Beach area and will leave just ½ mile to link it to the trail end at the Spring Creek Trailhead. In the meantime, Weber Pathways has begun working closely with Huntsville Town officials and Weber County engineering to determine the most cost effective way to get the trail safely into Huntsville. Thanks to the many donors for making all of this possible—Weber County RAMP, the Community Foundation of Ogden Valley, Weber County, Utah’s Recreational Trails Program, the Summit Group, and the many individual donors to Weber Pathways. The Adopt-A-River Program is also supported financially by a grant from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Blue Ribbon Fisheries Advisory Council, which shows not only the DWR’s support of the restoration of our rivers, but also of the continued partnership and support of community-based stewardship of our rivers. The Adopt-A-River Program will hold two major clean-ups a year in conjunction with the City’s Make-a- Difference Day in May and Patriot’s Day in September. Groups who participate in the program will also be responsible for ongoing maintenance of their stretch of river throughout the year. Construction on the Pineview Loop Pathway continues through this winter with the completion of the pedestrian bridge over Middle Inlet Creek. This is the first of three bridges on this section of trail, with the longest being 55 feet. Weber Pathways opted to complete the project hiring among local companies instead of ordering a pre-fabricated bridge from an out-of-state company. ARW Engineers of Ogden designed the bridge and abutments, Petersen Inc. of Ogden built the bridge, and CK Construction of West Haven built the abutments. This spring, Weber Pathways’ trail construction contractor, Advanced Paving, will complete the trail.
