Show The Ogden Valley news Page 6 Volume XXII Issue III January 15, 2014 Announcements Wedding Hunter - Dove Madeline Lindsay Hunter and Tyler Dove were united in marriage December 28, 2013 in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple. A reception was held in their honor at Pineview Lodge at Wolfcreek in Eden. The bride is the daughter of Jason and Dixie Thompson of Ogden, and Joseph Hunter of Salt Lake City. Parents of the bridegroom are Thomas and Cathryn Dove of Eden. Pictured left are Madeline and Tyler Dove. Birthdays Nola Diemel Nola Diemel of Eden was honored for her 80th birthday with a family gathering at Harley & Bucks Restaurant at Wolf Creek. She was born in Ogden on December 17, 1933, to Walter and Della Moyes. Her sister and brother are Rosalie and Kent Hurd, and Doug Nola Diemel Moyes. She graduated from Weber High School in 1952 and worked at Amalgamated Sugar Co., Hill Air Force Base, and Defense Depot Ogden. She moved to California and worked at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, retiring in 1984. She and her husband, John Diemel, later moved to Eden. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she has served in the Relief Society as president, as Junior Sunday School coordinator, and in the Primary and Young Womens organizations. She was a ward organist and music director. She and her husband served in the Ogden Temple. Music has been a large part of her life. She has accompanied many soloists and choruses. She sang in the Depot Chorus, the Sweet Adelines of Vergudo Hills, and with the Chordettes of Ogden Valley. She enjoys reading, sewing quilts, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. She and John spend part of their winters at their home in Harrisburg Estates, visiting with friends. Her children and their spouses are Peggi and Gary Nielsen, Brett and Trisha Simpson, and John Diemel. Her grandchildren are Casey Nielsen, Dustin Nielsen, Sylver Simpson, Danielle Simpson, Tanner Simpson, Savannah Simpson, Quade Simpson, Zachary Diemel, and Kyle Diemel. She has seven great-grandchildren. Obituaries Helen Olofson Helen Naomi Anderson Olofson Our loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend Helen Naomi Anderson Olofson passed away peacefully December 18, 2013. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Harold P. and Esther Kjar Anderson on September 12, 1923. She married Russell Clair Olofson on November 1, 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were married for 36 wonderful years. Helen was a graduate of East High School and attended University of Utah. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints and served faithfully in her many callings. She enjoyed reading, embroidering, gardening, and flowers. Helen was kind, loving and compassionate to others. She always wanted to feed visitors at her home. She loved her dogs, especially Kippy. She worried constantly about her daughters. She had a very special relationship with her daughter Tammy. Mom, we love you and will miss you very much. Special thanks to Peach Tree Assisted living and Hospice of Utah, especially Stephanie and Allison for their love and care they showed to Helen. She is survived by her daughters Shawnie (Robert) Stoker, Cherie (David) Burton, Heidi (Steve) Phipps, and Tammy Olofson; 12 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 4 great-greatgrandchildren; and sisters-in-law Bernice McLean and Duchess Creager. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; 3 brothers; and 2 great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held Saturday, December 28 at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. A viewing was held prior to services at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. Condolences may be sent to the family at <www.myers-mortuary.com> Obituaries Barbara Lee Dyer Jordan “Barb” May 14, 1928 ~ December 18, 2013 Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend passed away Barbara Jordan peacefully Wednesday, December 18, 2013. Barbara was born May 14, 1928 in Downey, California to Francis Chandler Dyer and Beatrice Sarah Booher. She attended Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado before pursuing her lifelong love of singing and music at the University of Southern California, receiving a BA in Voice and Music as well as her Elementary Teaching Certificate. Barbara was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Some of her most memorable experiences were singing and dancing in over 21 productions of local musicals and plays including the Long Beach Civic Light Opera. She met Frank Sinatra on an overseas flight from Europe after graduation and was pictured singing with him and a group of friends around a piano during the flight, another highlight of her life. She met the love of her life, Thomas Russell Jordan, at USC and they were married Larry I. Sunderland February 23, 1919 ~ December 29, 2013 Colonel Larry I. Sunderland, USAF, Retired passed away peacefully at his home in Ogden, Utah on December 29, 2013 surrounded by Larry Sunderland family. Larry was born February 23, 1919 in Putnam County, West Virginia to Alfred and Ruth Sunderland and was raised in Milton, West Virginia. He proudly served his country for more than 24 years. In 1942 he joined the Army Air Corp in support of WWII. Larry was stationed in England and North Africa, during which time he was a bomber pilot, flying 58 missions. His military career continued as a member of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, flying 18 missions. He completed his military career as a commander of a B-47 Squadron and in management with the Strategic Air Command. After retiring from the USAF in 1966, Larry owned and managed an apartment complex in Scottsdale, Arizona. He retired for a second December 19, 1950 in Long Beach, California. Together they raised two sons, Jeffrey Chandler and Steven Graham. The family spent many wonderful years on their boat sailing to Catalina Island during summer vacations. Barbara was a beloved kindergarten teacher in the Long Beach School District for over 30 years. After her retirement, she and Tom moved to Liberty, Utah to be near their family. She was offered a preschool teaching position at Valley Elementary in nearby Huntsville where she taught until 2008. Barbara is survived by her husband, Tom; sons Jeff (Jeni) and Steve (Chris); grandchildren, Codi (Carolyn), Dusti (Candice), John (Sharon), Kate (Joe), and Grace; and greatgrandchild, Sloan. The family would like to thank the many friends and neighbors for their love and support, and express their appreciation to Gentiva Hospice and Comfort Keepers for the expert and sensitive care they provided Barbara, which enabled her to live at home for the last few months of her life. At Barbara’s request, there will be no services. At a later date, her family will gather at Rainbow Gardens in Ogden, Utah for a “hat party” to celebrate her life. Larry then moved back to West Virginia to be closer to his mother, brothers and sisters. He later moved to Ogden, Utah to be closer to his youngest grandchildren. Larry was a firm believer in education. While in the military he completed his undergraduate degree at Ohio University and later his MBA at Arizona State University. Larry was also a 33rd degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite. Larry is survived by his daughter Sandra Richardson of Chester, Virginia; son Monty (Nancy) Sunderland of Henderson, Nevada; son Jeff (Barbie) Sunderland of Eden, Utah; and five grandchildren, one great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Ruth, brothers Joe and Harry, sisters Juanita and Betty, and his grandson Steven. Per Larry’s wishes, there will be no services. Those wishing to do so may honor Larry by contributing to either of his favorite charities— Shriners Hospital for Children or the Scottish Rite Children’s Learning Center.
