Ogden Canyon’s Historic Gray Cliff Celebrates 100-Year Anniversary This summer marks the 100th anniversary contributions to Ogden. Thomas Dee is rememof the construction of the Thomas Dee family summer home in the Ogden Canyon, presently the Gray Cliff Lodge Restaurant. To be used as a summer home, the building was erected in 1912 by the Dee family. It was named for the gray cliffs, a hallmark of Ogden Canyon, located behind the structure. The building was erected after Dee’s death to accommodate his wife and seven children. The home was designed with three studio apartments on each end, one for each of the six daughters and their families, and two bedrooms upstairs—one for Mrs. Dee and the other for her youngest, a son. The Dee family made many significant bered because of his many and varied businesses and civic interests. He was known as the father of the Ogden Public School system, serving as either president or school board member for thirty-five years. His contributions span the time period between the early 1860s until his death in 1905. He was best remembered for the Thomas Dee Memorial Hospital, a major portion of which was funded in his name by his family after his death as one of the key contributors that led to the establishment of the McKay-Dee Hospital Center.
