Beehive Rock and Gem Society Exhibit Through January 5 - A fine collection of lapidary work by the Beehive Rock and Gem Society on display featuring a variety of polished rocks and handcrafted jewelry created with silversmithing and wire wrapping techniques. Book Discussion - The Help by Kathryn Stockett - January 18, 7:00 p.m. Set in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960’s, this story revolves around Miss Skeeter who is a young white woman and aspiring writer who wants to publish a series of interviews which nar- rate the daily struggles of local black maids. Great risk is involved even a century after the Emancipation Proclamation. Miss Skeeter is moved by the stories of black maids who raised white children and ran households but were paid poorly, often had to use separate toilets from the family, only to watch the children they cared for grow into an acceptance of racism and bigotry. Call for Entry for Statewide Black and White Competition The Eccles Community Art January 27, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Center in Ogden is announcing a call for entry for its 13th Statewide Black & White Competition. This competition is open to artists and photographers who presently reside in the state of Utah. Only work in black, white, and/or shades of gray will be accepted. All work must be original, completed within the past two years, and not have been previously exhibited in a juried exhibit sponsored by the Eccles Community Art Center. Artwork must be framed, fully assembled, including wire for hanging, and ready for display. Artists are limited to a total of two entries. Entry fees are $7 per entry. Entry fees are used for prize money and publicity and are not refundable. Entries must be clearly identified by the artist with title, medium, and price/insurance value. Identification tags and result cards are provided to the artist at the time of entry. The original works will be accepted Friday, and Saturday, January 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden. Work will not be accepted after 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 28. This is a juried competition, and awards will be presented. The Eccles Community Art Center will present monetary awards, including three Honorable Mentions and Best of Show. A reception for artists, friends, and the community will be held Friday, February 3, 2012 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Art Center. The awards will be announced at this reception. The exhibit will be on display February 3 through February 25, 2012. Anyone interested in receiving information or a call for entry should call a member of the art center staff at 801-392-6935. Eccles Community Art Center January Exhibits This January, the Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden, in its main gallery, will exhibit the paintings of Beverly J. Child. In the Carriage House Gallery, the work of Kory Fluckiger will be featured. A reception for the artists and the public is scheduled on Friday, January 6 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The exhibits will remain on display through January 28, 2012. Beverly J. Child was a resident student of Weber State at the Eccles Community Art Center in its dormitory years. She is now returning to exhibit her artwork in the main gallery. Mrs. Child has painted for years, receiving over 61 awards, 7 of which were “Best In Show” awards. Her work has been awarded in two International Art Competitions, has been included in Utah Traveling Art Exhibits, and has received a purchase award from the Brigham City Museum. Her art was featured at the Gallery at Union Station in December 2009. Mrs. Child has a dual teaching certificate in art, which she has renewed with art courses and workshops throughout the years. Salt Lake City artist Kory Fluckiger has returned to Ogden with a featured exhibit in the Carriage House Gallery after serving for the United States Peace Corp with his wife Heather McKinnon through the spring of 2010. His work will include realistic watercolor paintings of subjects from the natural world, including flowers, aspens, and rock cairns. Kory explains his current work, “I am a hard-working, stay-at-home dad plying my trade in fine arts and freelance illustration and looking to expand my network in those areas. I am a social artist and excel in collaborative work. I am also a poet and creative writer.
