Show Page The Ogden Valley news Volume XVIII Issue XII December 1, 2010 Announcements Birthday Elva Thompson Elva Thompson Elva Thompson is celebrating her 98th birthday on Saturday, November 27, 2010. An open house was held in her honor for family and close friends at the Huntsville Ward located at 277 South 7400 East in Huntsville. Elva was born in Liberty on November 26, 1912 to John and Bessie Montgomery, the oldest of six siblings. Elva married Wells Thompson on January 21, 1931 in the Salt Lake Temple. She enjoyed gardening, painting, quilting, making dolls, and having family close by. Children and their spouses are Rex and wife LuJean (deceased), West Haven; Jay (deceased) and wife Barbara, Idaho; Glen and Janet, Huntsville; and Lois and Steve Jeffs, Huntsville. She has 16 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 8 greatgreat-grandchildren. Eagle Scout Awards Braden Amann has received his Eagle Scout Award. For his Eagle Project, he raised $652 dollars to purchase supplies needed to build shelves, then organized a shelving-building project for a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Storage unit located in Huntsville. The shelves can support 300 lbs a piece. CERT is now working on obtaining donated supplies to fill the shelves with items that will be needed in the event of an emergency or disaster situation in Ogden Valley. Obituaries Mary Katherine Gecan Christensen Mary Katherine Gecan Christensen, 91, died November 6, 2010, one day after her birthday, at her son’s home. She was born November 5, 1919 in Red Lodge, Mary Christensen Carbon, Montana the daughter of Ferdinand “Fred” and Gezella “Helen” Matkovich Gecan. Mary attended Elementary thru High School in Red Lodge and the Dee School of Nursing in Ogden and Weber State College. She has lived in Eden for the last 65 years. Mary married Joseph Bravandt Christensen on September 3, 1940 in Honeyville, Utah. Mary was a member of the Eden LDS 1st Ward and served in all organizations. She also served as a missionary at the Ogden Tabernacle Visitors Center. She was an officer in the PTA of Valley Elementary. Charles (Chuck) F. Hoffmann Chuck Hoffmann, 70, died November 7, 2010. He was born September 3, 1940 in Jamaica, Queens, New York to Andrew William and Muriel Wilhelmina Wunder Chuck grew Charles Hoffman Hoffmann. up in Long Island, NY, attending Roslyn High. He and his brother Bert started the 1st scuba diving club in the U.S. while in high school. He moved to Utah to play football at BYU at age 17, then moved to Washington and attended Washington State University before returning to Utah where he lived in Liberty and South Ogden. Chuck was married to Marilyn Mitton, and together had six children; they later divorced. He then married Janet Cazier, and were later divorced. He then married the love of his life, Terry ReNée Garr, on December 23, 2003. He was a member of the LDS Church and Bessie Mae Little Lee Bessie Mae Little Lee, 94, died Wednesday, 10 November 2010 of conditions due to age. She was born December 18, 1915 in Jellico, Campbell Co., Tennessee, a daughter of the late George Bessie Lee Washington and Mary Frances Garner Little. She married Leland Lafayette Lee on March 18, 1937. They served their country during World War II with Leland working at Douglas Aircraft Co. in Long Beach, California and Bessie as a homemaker. She later took employment with J.C. Penny’s in Whittier, California as a bookkeeper. After Leland’s death in 1975, Bessie moved to Thatcher, Arizona to be near her Mary was a RN at McKay Dee Hospital and furnished health care to neighbors under direction of physicians. Mary liked to visit Yellowstone and would take her grandchildren at times. Her family was important to her. She is survived by her daughter Mary Jo (Robert) Christensen Hancock of St. George; son Brent J. (Kareleen) Christensen of Eden; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Helen Gecan Acker of Rock Springs, Wyoming. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Joseph; parents; two brothers; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, November 12, 2010 at the Huntsville Stake Center, 6450 E. 1900 N., Eden. Interment, Eden Mtn. View Cemetery. Chuck enjoyed fishing, especially going to Yellowstone for the opening of the fish season every year on June 15. He also enjoyed waterskiing, snow skiing, BYU football, Jazz basketball, and crossword puzzles. Chuck is survived by his wife ReNée; children Tuck (Karey), Brett (Angie), Shauna (Bruce) Liston, Kipp (Karma), Tye (Shauna), and Sheila Hoffmann; stepchildren Jason (Denise) Whiteley, Brandon (Shannon) Whiteley, Marissa (Shane) Bassir, Krista Whiteley, Brinn (Andrea) Whiteley, Bretton Whiteley; and 28 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bert. Funeral services were held November 12, 2010 at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. Interment in the Liberty Cemetery, Liberty, Utah. During this period she also lived with her sister Rose Wagner in Clovis, New Mexico. She came to Nordic Valley, Utah in 2000 with Diane’s family. Surviving are her daughters: Diane Watson, Eden, Utah; Mary Ellen (Dixie) Garrick, Parowan, Utah; and Casey Chandler, Cypress, California; her sisters Rose Lovett of Inwood, West Virginia; and Gladys King of Lafollette, Tennessee. Bessie has 15 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 17 double great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held November 15 at the LDS Nordic Valley Ward, 2900 N. Hwy 162 in Eden, Utah. Burial was held Wednesday, November 17 at Rose Hill Cemetery, Whittier, California. Arrangements are under the direction of Myers Mortuary of Ogden.
