Ever wonder why property taxes always trend higher when market values go up but there is no trend lower when the market goes down? Or consider how a 150-year-old, three-bedroom “pioneer” home can have the same market value line as a new fivebedroom “McMansion”? Meet Lewis Johnson; he is not a politician! He’s a Utah homeowner, family man, public educator, and U.S. Navy veteran who says that it’s time for balance in local government, and genuine representation for all Weber County residents. Johnson agrees with Thomas Jefferson that elected office should be “public service” and not a lifetime career at taxpayer expense. Jefferson wrote, “All men are created equal. . . .” and in the same Declaration of Independence, stated that Americans not only have a right, but a moral obligation to change their government when the established situation no longer represents all the people. Jefferson was one of the first Democrats to hold office. Johnson says he will be proud to represent Weber County as a moderate Democrat who serves county residents’ best interests. What will Johnson fix if elected? “For one thing, I’d request a 20 percent pay cut for the County Commissioners,” he says. “I’d recommend a bigger cut but I still have to pay my property taxes!” Johnson admits that he is not a trained property assessor but says he is studying Utah Property Tax codes and will work for taxation equity as well as full representation for people from all areas of the county who appeal their assessments. “All people in Weber County deserve to be represented. It’s time for balance, for moderation, and for more ideas about how to provide necessary government services for county residents without laying the brunt of the burden on the homeowners’ shoulders.” Johnson is a lifelong Weber County resident, attended Weber County schools. His children are members of the fifth generation of the same family to live in the same Huntsville home. Except for a two-year church mission and six-year term in the U.S. Navy serving as a nuclear submarine service/reactor operator, Johnson has lived in Huntsville where he has served on the Town Council, and President of the Board of Adjustments. He is currently Huntsville Town Irrigation Company President. His education credentials include U.S. Navy Nuclear Power School graduate, Associate’s. Degree from the University of New York, a math and physics B.S. degree from Weber State University, and a University of Phoenix Master’s Degree in Educational Research. He is a certified teacher, a certified level II Water Treatment Plant Operator, and a licensed beekeeper. Johnson says he has never been afraid to work, study, or conduct the research needed to solve a problem. He began working for local farmers as a pre-teen, drove truck for Intermountain Precision Built Homes after high school, and then enlisted in the Navy. He has also worked as an electronics repairman and a master cabinet maker. His 19 year public-education career has been with the Weber County School District, currently assigned to North Ogden Junior High School teaching math. He took a year-long sabbatical from teaching to research, design, and help construct the Huntsville water treatment facility that he continues to help operate. Johnson is seeking office as a way to give public service to the community he loves, and believes his wide range of experience, education, and professional credentials will help him see a broad range of issues and solutions. “My candidacy is about representation for everyone.” School (OVMS).
