The Invasion of Normandy, established Allied forces in France during World War II as part of Operation Overlord. The D-Day event represented a major turning point in the war in favor of the Allied forces The attack was the largest seaborne invasion of its day, and involved over 156,000 troops that crossed the English Cannel from England. The invasion began with overnight parachute and glider landings behind the line in enemy territory in France, massive air attacks, and naval bombardments, the famous morning amphibious landings at Utah Beach and Omaha Beach amidst unsettled weather and high tides, and additional parachute landings again that evening. The amphibious assault began at 6:30 a.m. with the first strike on Utah Beach by American troops. At 6:35 a.m., underwater obstacles bottled up amphibious craft, stalling another landing on Omaha Beach, Utah and Omaha being code names for principal landing points for the Allied invasion into German-occupied France. The confusion and congestion of watercraft bogged down the soldiers, making them easy targets for German gunners who were on hand on the cliffs above the beach. Finally, about noon, the U.S. 1st and 29th divisions crossed the beach line held by the Germans. U.S. Allied forces who also participated in the June 6 invasion came from Canada, France, and the United Kingdom.
