Show Page The Ogden Valley news Volume XIV Issue XVIII December 1, 2007 Full Moon No More - School Starts Annual Christmas Carol “Sing-In” Scheduled The moon may still get full, but the Full Moon Gatherings with friends and music in Eden have come to the summer’s end; however, the new friendships that were formed and the music jamming continues on in the community. Students at Valley Elementary are already signed up for Orchestra and the Guitar Ensemble classes. They are tuning up for a great year of music-making with their director Theresa Ellis. The first concert of the year will be held at Valley Elementary in Huntsville, on Thursday, December 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the gymnasium. The Valley Band will also be featured with Snowcrest’s music teacher Mr. Broome. The students are working hard as a team. Students in second through sixth grade are participating in the orchestra and guitar ensemble programs. It’s a Party . . . The Second Annual Beach Party @ Your Library Summer is here again . . . at least for one night at the Ogden Valley Branch Library. On December 10 at 7:00 p.m., the staff of the Ogden Valley Branch Library will be chasing away all the impending winter blues with a night full of warm, sunny, summer fun with their Second Annual Family Fun Night Beach Party. All Valley residents are invited to unpack their Hawaiian shirts, Bermuda shorts, and don their coolest pair shades for this event, which promises to be full of good old fashion summer fun. The evening will of course begin with some of the best summertime stories and be followed by games and crafts truly fit for the beach. Afterwards, everyone will be invited to enjoy some great summertime refreshments. Family Fun Nights also provides an opportunity to learn more about literacy and the library. Parents can also learn how to raise a family of readers with the great literacy information and reading lists available at the library. All programs are free and open to the public. No registration is required. If you have any questions, call 337-2660. Ogden’s annual Christmas Carol “Sing-In” is slated for December 16, 2007 in the Ogden Tabernacle located on the southwest corner of 21st Street and Washington Boulevard. Those attending sing favorite, familiar, and traditional carols of Christmas to the accompaniment of the pipe organ played by Lowell Marriott Harrop. Guest conductor is Dr. Karen Brookens-Potter. As a special presentation, the male vocal group T MINUS 5 will be featured. The Christmas Carol “Sing-In” began 26 years ago as an opportunity for people to sing the uplifting carols of the season—those celebrating the Nativity, the baby Jesus, the star, the shepherds, the angels, and the wise men—the real reason and purpose of Christmas. This is in contrast to the commercialization of the holiday season. Everyone, of all ages, is welcome to attend and participate. This joyous singing experience begins at 7:00 p.m. There is no admission cost. Weber Reads . . . Beowulf Are You Up for the Challenge? New this year, Weber County will be participating in One Community, One Book, which is a community-wide reading program designed to foster civic cohesion by encouraging all residents to read a single book. This year, Beowulf is the Weber Reads program’s book of choice. As a part of the Weber Reads program, the Ogden Valley Branch Library is challenging Valley residents to read and discuss the timeless tale of Beowulf. To help accomplish this, a book discussion will be held at the library in January. Residents will be given the opportunity to explore this unique story that, though age-old, remains resonant and relatable to modern readers. Copies of Beowulf: An Imitative Translation will be available for checkout at the Ogden Valley Branch Library during the month of January. Stay tuned for the date and time of this upcoming book discussion program. If you have any questions, please call 337-2660.
