Beginning in October, monthly life saving training and refresher courses will be available to community members. The Ogden Valley CERT program is in need of volunteers to participate in this vital community emergency response program. Eden Writers are Warming up for Stories Around the Campfire Over the past year, members of the Eden Writers group have been working on short, scary stories. Most of the writer’s stories are set here in Ogden Valley. It is the Eden Writers’ hope, in the near future, to compile these stories and publish a book called Tales from Eden and Beyond. On October 19 and 20, Eden Writers is hosting a Writers Conference at the Red Moose Lodge. Writers, presenters, editors, and agents from all over the country will be in attendance. The first night of the conference the Eden Writers are planning on sharing their scary stories around the fire. “Many of those attending the conference are very excited about this aspect of the conference,” says Eden Writers President Drienie Hattingh. “Many are from the big city, and the idea of stories around the fire is appealing. It’s an offering different from others they’ve found at previous conferences they’ve attended.” In preparation for the conference, Eden Writers are presenting a community reading of their scary stories at the Ogden Valley Branch Library on September 17. The event will begin at 7:00 a.m. Selections to be presented include: Cry for me my child, Jellie, The Protector, The Last Gas Stations, selections from Edgar Allan Poe, and a reading from the movie Carrie. Tribal Rhythms at The Eccles Community Art Center In African tradition, dance and music go hand in hand. Dancers perform complex steps in perfect time to the fast polyrhythms of drums. There is a dialogue going on; both are watching and listening to each other in an intricate exchange. It’s a celebration of life, a social occasion, a communication of something powerful, and an exhilarating experience to watch and to take part in. Teacher and dancer Deja Mitchell has been studying traditional African dance for many years and is now bringing her experience to the community in a drum class at the Eccles Community Art Center in Ogden. The class will focus on beginning hand drum technique and explore the basics of traditional African rhythms and other world music styles. A facilitated drum circle and “stomp” style movements will keep it fresh and fun. Deja’s experience with breaking down complex rhythmic structures will bring accessibility and a unique approach. High-quality African Heartwood djembe drums are provided for in-class use. These drums are available due the funds received from Weber County Ramp. Tribal Rhythms will be offered as a six week workshop with two sessions available. Session One will be held Monday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., September 10 through October 15. Session Two will also be held Monday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., October 22 through November 26. Tuition is $45 per student for each session. To pre-register for Tribal Rhythms, please call Debra or Liz at 801-392-6935. The Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden offers Tribal Rhythms, African Based Movement, Acrylic Painting and Design, and a variety of other workshops as after school educational alternatives for children.
