In 2004 and 2005, 60% of the aspen, mixed conifer, and mountain brush in burn units A, B, G H, and I were treated, which has improved range and wildlife habitat and stimulated vegetation regeneration. Weather permitting, burn unit A (see attached map) consisting of 600 acres of aspen, mixed conifer, and mountain brush within the Curtis Aspen prescribed burn multi year project could also be implemented. The Curtis Aspen prescribed burn project is located in the Curtis Ridge area north of Highway 39, approximately 20 miles west of Randolph, Utah. The purpose of both the Monte Cristo and Curtis Aspen prescribed burn projects is to areas. Qualified fire personnel will use hand held drip torches and a helicopter to ignite fire in the designated units. Engines and crews will monitor the burn areas until the fire is completely out. Visitors to the Forest can expect delays along the roads in the area during the day of the burns, and can expect to smell smoke. The burn areas will be closed to the public on the day of the burns.
