Show wm mexs DET OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 3 July 1, 2006 USDA Forest Service Dedicates Aviation UDOT to Hold Open House Regarding Express Lanes— Carpool lane decals to be sold to motorists Hangar at Ogden Regional AirportShowcases fire fighting aircraft and ground equipment The Intermountain Region of the Forest Service dedicated their Aviation Operations Hangar located at the Ogden Regional Airport on June 2. The Forest Service recently renovated and expanded the facility. The Aviation Operation Hangar is the agency’s largest aviation operation group. Though operational year round, peak activity occurs during the months of June, July, August, and September when wildfires traditionally burn in the West. Approximately six planes from the Forest Service’s Aviation fleet were on display OGDEN ALLEY including a Douglas DC-3, DeHavilland DHC-6 Twin Otter, King Air BE-200, King Air B90, Aero Turbo Commander TC-690, and Cessna Citation CE-550 along with fire fighting engines from the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Twenty-eight full time employees work at the facility year round with an additional 15 to 20 smokejumpers stationed in Ogden during the summer months. Approximately $5.5 million to $6 million UDOT will hold an open house in Salt Lake County to answer questions about the new Interstate 15 ae Lanes that begin operation on September 1, The open house will be ie June 29 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the SLCC Miller Campus at 9750 S. 300 W. in Sandy. Beginning in August, up to 600 single occupant drivers who are willing to pay $50 er month can acquire an official Express Lane decal for their vehicles. In September, direct dollars per year are channeled into the local economy through the Forest Service Intermountain Region Aviation Operations Hangar. Newcomers to the Valley will find community resources, and may request For more information about the OVBA, visit www.ovba.org or call 745-2550 Celebrates 50th Anniversary of the Interstate System UDOT UDOT recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Interstate System by hosting a farewell event for members of the commemorative convoy from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). In honor of the 50 year celebration, AASHTO organized a coast-to-coast convoy featuring approximately 20 trucks, buses, recreational vehicles, and cars to travel along Interstate . to commemorate the original convoyof Lt. Col. Dwight Eisenhower in 1919. “a 1919, Eisenhower traveled from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco. The difficult trip took over two months and was his inspiration for the interstate highway system. Carpoolers, buses, motorcycles, and clean fuel burning vehicles will still be able to drive in the lane for free. The carpool lane is currently reaching less than half of its capacity. By allowing solo drivers to purchase decals and drive in the excess capacity, the other general lanes will see a decrease in travel times without negameely impacting travel times in the carpool lan ees a Park onto eastbound I-80. Speakers at the event included Governor Jon M. Huntsman, Jr., UDOT Executive Director John Njord, and Idaho Department of Transportation Executive Director David Ekern.
