Debbra volunteers for OVP because _ business, The Packager, last year), he sayshe PaTHWAYS = Capping the many Ocpen VALLEY CHAPTER successes of 200 Ogden Valley Pathways expanded its Executive Committee and selected several new members. This group of ten volunteers have some exciting plans for the organization in 2 arion Horna is the new Chair of Ogden Valley Pathways. Marion is from the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area and joined the Navy right out of college. Today he lives in Eden and works as a wind energy consultant. He says that he volunteers for OVP because “I want to see the rural beauty and scenic views of Ogden Valley preserved for those who follow us. I believe that fostering a system of pathways throughout the Valley will help to achieve this goal while providing areas for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing.” Marion’s goals this year are threefold: Think big, Mobilize the community, and Have fun The position of Vice chair is now filled by Melodie Hansen. Melodie was born in Phoenix, Arizona and grew up in Ogden. She attended Weber State University on an art scholarship. Today Melodie lives in Eden. When she’s not volunteering for Pathways, she skis and plays tennis. Her reasons for volunteering for OVP are simple: “Tt’s good for the community, and it’s good for my family.” Melodie will be working on our new youth programs and initiatives this year—more on that in our next issue. Rita Booth was selected for our new position of Treasurer, which we created to focus on our finances and track our spending on trail construction and maintenance. Rita was born in Logan, Utah and grew up in the Ogden area. While she is not volunteering for Pathways, she is grandmother to Carver, Taylor, Josephine, and Zachary; plus bookkeeper at the Booth Dental Clinic and skier, hiker, river runner, and runner. Rita volunteers for OVP so she can “make sure there are places for my grandchildren to recreate.” Rita’s goals are to develop methods to effectively manage OVP income and spending. Coming back for a second year as Lead for Fund-Raising is Debbra Wheatley. Debbra is another native Utahn on the Executive Committee as she was born and raised in Tremonton (population about 4000 at the time she was growing up). She just recently retired from a computer software business that she owned and managed with her husband Kim. When she is not raising funds for Pathways, she spends time with her two year old grandson, whom she adores she enjoys the outdoors and loves to hike, bike, and ski. For this year, she wants to continue the fund-raising success of 2004, plus implement some new fund-raising ideas so that a trail from Huntsville to Eden will soon become a reality. John Klisch is also back for a second year as Lead for Ordinances. When the County passed the Ogden Valley Pathways ordinance, John thought he had worked himself out of a job. Not so! The County asked Pathways to help implement the ordinance, and John is doing just that. He grew up in Virginia and moved to Eden after retiring from the Navy in 1999. When he’s not working with OVP, he spends his time woodworking, hiking, and skiing. He volunteers for Pathways because “hiking has been one of my life-long passions, and now that I’m retired I have the time to give back for all of the years I spent using the trails. Plus, I want to help build a trail network for the community.” Paul DeLong was selected to help John on Ordinances because of his background on the Eden Planning Committee. Paul was born and grew up in Waterloo, lowa. After graduating from Iowa State University, he worked for the John Deere company in Waterloo for over 33 years. When he’s not volunteering for OVP, he enjoys the outdoors—hiking, biking, and fishing in summer; and skiing in winter. In fact, some of you may know him as a Mountain Host at Powder Mountain. He gives his time to Pathways because he thinks non-motorized trails are important to the health and quality of life for the community. “The trails provide exercise, a venue to enjoy the beauty of the Valley, and the opportunity to view wildlife.” Bill Allison is now our Lead for Trail Maintenance. Bill lives in Nordic Valley and works as an Associate Professor of History at Weber State University. He was born in Sulphur Springs, Texas and attended Texas A&M University and Bowling Green in Ohio. He says that “volunteering with OVP was a great way to meet people and get connected with Ogden Valley when we moved to the Valley in 2003. OVP is a great organization with enthusiastic, hard-worki i doing a crucial building, and protecting network in the Valley.” In build on the successes of more trails and getting groups involved. Leading Holmstrom. e Now that he’s retired (Dave sold his spends his time clipping coupons. Of course, those of you who know Dave know that he’s doing a lot more than that! He volunteers his time with OVP because, “That’s what I should do for the community.” His 2005 goals are to pave Eden Trail (from River Drive to the North Arm Trailhead) as well as East Eden Pathway (from the North Arm Trailhead to Eden General Store); and to start work on building a trail from Huntsville to Eden. Heading up a new program area, Adopt-A-Trail, is Brandon Fuller. Brandon was born and raised in Eden, Utah. When he’s not volunteering for OVP, he works in real estate. He contributes his time to Pathways “for the benefit of my boys.” Brandon’s goals for the year are to have five trails adopted by families, businesses, or groups in the area. We’ll introduce our new Adopt-A-Trail program in the next issue of The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS. We created three slots for Members At Large and filled the first with Sharon Holmstrom. Sharon was born in McCook, Nebraska and grew up in Wyoming and Ogden. Some of you may know her as 1998 Utah Teacher of the Year; or maybe from her 20 years at Ogden Valley schools. She volunteers for Pathways because she cares about the community she lives in. Her goals for 2005 are to promote community awareness and to boost community input to Pathways. And, what about me, Helene Liebman? I’m still around, having taken on the position of Executive Director of Weber Pathways and Ogden Valley Pathways. My goals for the year are to help the Executive Committee achieve its goals. Plus, I'll still be writing these articles and sending out my occasional emails to announce meetings and other pathways-related events. WEBER PATHWAYS — PRESENTS WORLD-RENOWNED MOUNTAINEER It’s not too late to get your tickets to “Dinner With Simon Yates.” Simon is a world-renowned author and mountaineer whose adventures with Joe Simpson are recounted in Touching the Void. Yates will relate his experiences climbing in the Uttermost Part of the Earth at this Pathways fund-raiser on January 21. All proceeds for the dinner will go toward our efforts to promote, plan, and preserve non-motorized pathways in Weber County. Tickets are $100, $75, and $50 for the event. To purchase tickets or for more information, contact Weber Pathways at 393-2304 or <wp(@weberpathways.org> CALLING ALL CROSS-COUNTRY SKIERS If you like to cross-country ski, you should really try the trails at North Fork Park in Liberty. The Utah Nordic Alliance (TUNA) grooms over 15 kilometers of trails here, so it’s a great location to get out on your skis. This year, TUNA needs $2,800 for new trail grooming equipment. They’re asking for donations and especially asking for skiers to pay their voluntary $3 when they use the trails at North Fork (you can leave the money in the drop box at the beginning of the trail). Also, you can get a season’s pass for $30. If you’re interested in making a donation or purchasing a season’s pass, send a check to: TUNA PO Box 643 EDEN UT 84310. OGDEN VALLEY PATHWAYS FEBRUARY MEETING Our February meeting will be on February 2, at 7:00 p.m. at the Ogden Valley Library. Please come and help us make decisions on some of our new programs.
