Schoot 9eias November 30, 2001 The Summit County Bee Members Receive Chapter and Greenhand Degrees Braves Dedicafe Wrestling Season FFA FFA Reporter: Amy Blackburn On Nov. 13. several FFA members were honored to receive their FFA Nineteen members degrees. received their Greenhand Degrees and Eight members received their Chapter degrees. These honors recognize the members demonstrated knowledge and achievements in agricultural awareness, leadership, career development and community service programs. The Greenhand Degree is the first degree awarded to high school members of the National FFA Organization. The Chapter is the second degree awarded. Those receiving the Greenhand FFA Degree include the following: Cameron Adams, Adria Bagnell. Audrey Banks. Blake Be'rguson. Logan Bryant. Trisha Bryson, Nicole Hale. Chad A. Harper. Marcn Jones. Agricultural education instructors serve as chapter advisors. Steven Hamilton, North Summit's Head Wrestling Coach, announced that as a team the Braves had decided that this season will be dedicated to Kelsey Robinson a former teammate who lost his life in a motorcycle accident on Aug. 17. Kelsey was a state champion agriculture. FFA programs allow members the opportunity to practically apply the knowledge they gain in the dass-nxrto real world experiences. measure their expertise also They iocal. state and national through competitions. ni -- Cheer Competition FFA North Summit High School will host its second annual Cheerleading Competition Saturday, December I. 2001. beginning at 7 p.m. in the High School gymnasium. Everyone is invited to attend this fun event, as chccr squads from North Sevier, Juan Diego. Juab, St. Joe, Duchesne, and North Summit compete. Concessions will be available. Plan to conic and support the North Summit Cheerleading Squad. On Nov. 17. the Echo Road Sheds were full of excitement. The North Summit FFA Chapter held their annual Turkey Shixit. They hud a great turn out. The individuals who competed seemed to enjoy it. It was a great day. There were several different events, for all different types of shixiters. Several of the people were interested in the Shot Gun contest. The winners in that contest were in the first round second place was Jess Richins. the first place winner was retirement Student Writer: Julie Hewson Turkey Shoot FFA Reporter: Amy Blackburn Nov. 16 and 17 marked the beginning of the high school swim season fix two swimmers at North Summit. Heidi Hewson and Rosilyn Peterson participated in a meet hosted by the Park City Swim Team at the Ecker Hill Swimming Pool. Fifteen teams participated in the meet. Rosilyn swam the 200 yard Individual Medley and placed seventh. She also swam the 100 yard Back Stroke and came in fourth. Alex Judd. In the second round. Pcl Lym won first place, and Cixly Eardly won first. There was also a 22 Pistol contest, the winners in that contest were Paul Leiningcr placing first, and Jared Shulte in second place. The winners in the 22 Rifle contest were second place Miles Evans and first place Eric Burton. The winners of the high caliber pistol were in second place Nathan Ixininger and first place Don Snyder. Congratulations to all the winners. Ednct is a system of college classes taught by professors and satellite through Utah' Stale University. The professors are part of the Uintah Basin Extension of USU and teach out of a classroom in Roosevelt. The class is broadcast to many rural sites throughout Utah. The students watch the teacher on a television screen and can communicate with the pmfessix using the microphone. The teachers fax tests and assignments to the sites and the students mail their assignments back. The Ednet system offers many great opportunities. The team placed fourteenth overall. North Summit has a very unique situation this swim season. The team was unable to find a coach and is now practicing with the Park City team under Couch Kathy Govern. The girls will still be representing the Braves but will he wixking out in the Miners home pcxil. The next meet will be December sixth at Ixkcr Hill. The team decided it wixild be good motivation for out team to remember Kelsey during practices and matches. Coach Hamilton spoke to the crowd between the JV and Varsity matches, reminding us of Kelsey's example and asking fix a moment of silence. This is a great deal considering the cost of taking college courses at a University. Diane Holmes. Nixth Summit's F.dnet Facilitator, said that the biggest benefit of the Ednet system is.the fact that the students are getting free college classes." Mrs. Holmes thinks that most of the students arc taking advantage of this exceptional resource but some need to take the classes more seriously. Ednet is a very new thing at Nixth Summit. The program was in the schixtl several years ago. hut was removed because of various problems. The bugs are still being worked (Hit and the students, schixtl and facilitator are still experimenting to find out what wixks and what doesn't. The first semester Ednet classes have just ended and second semester is just getting started. The students are anxiously waiting to receive final grade repixts from the USU main office.
