Wc get more this way. The beginning of a new year holds much fascination. Some of us breath a sigh of relief over having made it thru obstacles of last year. Some of us will laugh because for us. it is all very silly. We worry or procrastinate about the details of our existence, which in the moment feel so powerful, and then ... poof it has passed! What was it we were so perplexed with anyway ? It has been said more times than can be counted that life is short, ft really is al that. Life should be enjoyed. Wc do not need holidays to remind us of this. We do not need Christmas to cherish our loved ones and to smile a little more at strangers. 1'his year, let us move forward with optimism and with the release of yesterday and what has passed. The part of their visit the kids always seem to like best is when I introduce them to the various animals by their "pen" names. (I've named several after some of my fax'orite authors.) After a tour of the place I always leave plenty of time for questions and answers. Young children ask great questions. Such as: "Why do you put bells on cows if they already have horns? "Do goats really eat cans?" nose? When a dairy cow laughs does milk come out her nose?" "What happens when a momma pig has more babies than she has faucets?" I answered truthful"That's a ly and I said. "Just good question," remember that the boy, or male, of any species is always better looking." For some reason this set off the mother who was chaperoning that day and for the rest of the field trip she was arguing with me and generally trying to make me kxik stupid in front of foe youngsters. (A task, as it turned out.) The matter-of-factl- "How come black and white cows eat green grass and make white milk?" It's the least I can do. And I must say some of my answers have been truly inspired. So when one tofu-eatin- g, w kid asked, "Why do cows have four stomachs and people only one?" I saw my chance to retaliate. "Cows need four stomachs to digest food like alfalfa sprouts, grain and granola that people were never meant to eat in foe first place." Invariably about a week after foe field trip I'll receixe a packet of crudely crayoned thank-yo- u letters from the kids with pictures they drew of the animals they met at the ranch. I have saved all foe letters, but one in particular is pinned on my bulletin board. It reads, "Thank you very much. My teacher said to say we all had a good time and enjoyed our field trip. But my mother said you were full of manure." I know who foe mom of that poor child is! Letters To The Editor Pblfcv The Summit County Bee welcomes Letters To The Fditor on any subject.
