Show June 2, 2000 The Summit County Bee PgcA7 Volunteer Jobs at The Symphony Announces 2000 Summer Season at Childrens Museum of Utah Deer Valley, Snowbird, Abravanel Hall and Sandy Do you want to learn how a Museum worts? Do you warn to he ' pail of changing a child's life? Do you. want to I make a difference, and have fun at the same lime? If you are between the ages of (0 and 17, you can volunteer at ihe Childrens Museum of Utah and do all this and more. The Summer Session runs from June 19. The application deadline is May 29. 2000. To be a volunteer, you must HU out an application and make an appointment for an interview, then complete both the Museum and Volunteer Training Sessions. The Youth Volunteer Program at the Children's Museum of Utah provides Youth the opportunity to serve as Visitor Services Volunteers. In this capacity, the volunteers act as the primary contact between the Museum and its visitors. Each Volunteer it stationed in one of the Museum's public galleries and serves as mediator, educator and playmate. The Youth Volunteers quickly become familiar w ith ail of die Museums exhibits, programs and policies, and are available tA answer any questions a visitor may have. The Youth Volunteer Program is 26-Au- SuBscriBe To The Bee! offered four times a year in eight-wee- k sessions. The Volunteers make commita once a week, two-hou-r ment to the Museum, much the same way they would a paying job. In fact, the program mirrors the job application process and serves as an opportunity for youth to begin to master filling out a job application, presenting themselves well in an interview' situation, and facing Ihe responsibility of making a long-tercommitment. The Museum houses more than 80 permanent exhibits, and hosts daily workshops and special performances that encompass the arts, sciences, humanities and world cultures. The Museum's outreach program travels to every county in the stale of science Utah providing hands-o- n fifth students. to exploration grade The Children's Museum is located at 840 North 300 West in Salt Lake City with easy access from both and the 600 North exit off MS. Nanci Griffith and Celtic Program with Keith Lockhart. The Utah Symphony kicks off a summer season packed with traditional favorites and showslopping guest artists in time for its annual Independence Day celebrations, beginning July I at Deer Valley. Highlighting the summer of 2000 will be appearances by superstars Maureen McGovern. Art Garfunkel and Nanci Griffith, a Celtic celebration with Music Director Keith Lockhart, an all Broadway program, an evening of swing music with the group Five By Design, and a special family program at Sandy City's new outdoor amphitheater. The season will also feature a new August festival titled The Mozart Effect." Each concert in this three-pa- rt series will feature a Mozart piano concerto as well as other works inspired by the great Austrian Back of The Wasatch Fiber Festival, June 24-2- 5 Saturday and Sunday. June 24-2at the Summit County Faiigrounds in Coalville, the second annual Back of the Wasatch Fiber Festival will be held. A fiber festival is an event that brings together natural fiber producers and natural fiber artists for a weekend of fun, classes, competition. and demonstrations of traditional fiber and farm arts and crafts. All shepherds, goatherds, llama I lovers, alpaca aficionados, natural fiber artists and the animals who contribute their annual woolly coats are invited to participate. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend and show: support for their local fiber farmers who are going through a very difficult time right now. (It costs more to shear a sheep than a shepherd gels paid for the sale of the wool produced these days ) The two day festivities will include an Estonian knitting class by Nancy Bush of the Wooly West, Salt Lake City: and Spinning and ' Weaving classes presented by Norman Kennedy. Cohan medley, an Armed Forces Salute, the Battle Hymn of the Republic and more, and Assistant Conductor Kory Katseanes will lead the orchestra in Sousa marches and patriotic tunes. The Symphony celebrates 100 years of Broadway music with A Century of Song" at 7:30 p.m. on goods. July 17. at 8 p.m., the Symphony makes Sandy's new amphitheater an official part of its summer season, performing a special family concert with Lockhart at the podium and a guest appearance by members of Children's Dance Theater. The vocal quintet Five By Design joins the Symphony for Club Swing." a musical journey through the jazziest tunes of the swing era. at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. July 21. at Abravanel Hall and Saturday. July 22, at Deer Valley. This program reunites the Symphony and Five By Design, who recorded the successful album Radio Days" together in 1997. Folkcountry superstar Nanci Griffith brings her Grammywinning sound to the Utah Symphony at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Aug. 4. at Abravanel Hall and Saturday, Aug. 3, at Deer Valley. With Katseanes at the podium. the Quren of Folkabilly" will perform some of her biggest hits, including Gulf Coast Highway. Outbound Plane. This Heart and others. Now celebrating his 27th year as a solo artist, the legendary Art Garfitnkel appears in a Symphony weekend beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Aug. II. at Abravanel Hall and Saturday. Aug. 12, at Deer Valley. Garfunkel will sing his own hits, including All I Know. A Heart in New York and Bright Eyes, as well as ballads by Marvin Gaye, Cat Lovin' Stevens. Spoonful, more. and LennonMcCanney Katseanes conducts. In a program, he designed especially for Utah Symphony audiences, Keith Lockhart leads the orchestra in a musical celebration of the Wasatch Valley's rich Celtic heritage at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Aug. 8 at Abravanel Hall and Saturday, Aug. 19. at Deer Valley. This special program also features tenor George Dyer. Irish dancers and an Irish hand. The summer season once again ends with a hang as the Symphony presents its annual 1812 Overture Grande Finale, Saturday. Aug. 26. at 7:30 p.m. at Deer Valley and Sunday. Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. at Snowbird. In addition to the traditional performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture (complete with live cannons), pianist Louiza Borac. the Gina Bachauer Piano Competition silver medalist, will solo in Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto. Free Admission Events The Utah Symphony returns to the Gallivan Center in downtown Salt take City for two free Lunchtime Entertainment Concerts, where the public is invited to bring a lunch and enjoy an hour of music outdoors. The first concert, on Wednesday, July 12, at noon, will feature Kory' Katseanes conducting a string of patriotic tunes. The second program will take place on Wednesday. Aug. 23, at noon. A conductor and repertoire will be announced soon. The Symphony will again participate in the annual Singin in the Pari" concert ith manlier of Utah Opera. The program will rake place Thursday. July 27. at 7:30 p.m. at Park in Valley Regional and will he conducted Taylorsville, by the Utah Symphony's Bundil and Utah Opera's Ungrangsec 1 Douglas KinneyFrost. On Thursday. Aug. 24. the Symphony returns to the Sandy Amphitheater for a free concert at 8 p.m. The conductor and repertoire for this concert will be announced in July.
