The Living Traditions Festival Celebrates 15th Anniversary in In celebration of the ethnic and folk artists of Salt Lake Valley, the Salt Lake City Arts Council, in part- nership with the Folk Arts Program of the Utah Arts Council, presents annual fifteenth the Living Traditions Festival on May 19. 20. and 21. The festival is held at Washington Square, on the grounds of the Salt Lake City & County Building (450 South and 2(X) Last.) The Living Traditions Festival presents the traditional music, dance, crafts, and foods of the many ethnic and folk communities in the Salt Lake area and is free and open lo the public, beginning Friday, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and running Saturday, from noon lo 10 p.m., and Sunday, from noon lo 7 p.m. Guest artists The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Alvin Youngblood Hart will perform starting at 8 p.m. on the North Stage on Friday and Saturday respectively. In partnership with the Utah Stale Office of Education, a field trip program for local elementary students is presetted on Friday morning from 9 a.m. lo noon. More than fifty ethnic groups are represented at the threeday event, sharing their respective cultural traditions with the audience. Over fifty performances, twenty community groups preparing traditional fixxls for sale, and two dozen craftspeople demonstrating the skills passed down through generations are scheduled. The Crafts Market and Living Traditions Cantina will be reluming this year. In honor of the fifteenth anniversary of this community celebration. a performance workshops will be added to the program, and a Living Traditions craft show will be on exhibit in the Finch Lane Gallery at the Art Bara (1325 East 100 South) from April 21 until June 2. 2(XX). Each year at Living TraJitions, a idc range of craftspeople who have learned their skills from family members or by apprenticing with a recognized master in the craft, demonstrate their techniques and materials. The range of expression is remarkable and represents practical objects as well as decorative items. These craftspeople work in such varied materials as film metal, wood. w 1 2000 heads, paper, and eggshells. The exhibit "Artisans from the Living Traditions Festival" will provide another opportunity for people to appreciate the richness of crafts traditions and both the similarities and differences between cultures in their craflwork. This exhibit will he on view concurrently with the work of wildlife artist Caret Brest van Kcmpcn. The Living Traditions Festival always welcomes volunteers to help with parking, festival setup and takedown, trash pickup, and Tshirt and soft drink sales. A slate winner in each of the two age divisions 1215 and 1618 will he selected. Winners in each division will receive a $ l.(KX) savings bond, a wardrobe allowance, their trip to an exciting funfilled National pageant at Opryland USA. annually renewable scholarships and much more. The two National winners will receive $5,(XX) and $I(),(XX) cash scholarships. . There is no swimsuit competition. Participants are judged on scholastic achievement, leadership, community involvement and individuality. May 2. at 7:30 p.m. at Peery's Egyptian Theatre. Allan Jacobs learned to juggle from a roommate while attending the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1977. Svxm after, he formed the group Slap Happy, w hieh was twice awarded 'Rest Comedy of the Year by The Boston Globe. They eventually played over 2fK) colleges and Universities, enjoyed a four month run at The Other End in New York City, and made numerous appearances on local and national TV. Allan has also taught juggling at Ringling Brothers and Ramum and Bailey's Clown College. In addition. 1 at The Egyptian he also found the time to capture the International Jugglers Association's Team Championship in 1978 and Solo Championship in 1983. Allan currently lives in New York City w ith his w ife and two children. Barrett Felkcr learned the art of juggling at age 15 from a cousin. After completing his studies at the University of Arizona, he moved to Boulder. Colorado, and in 1980 won International the Jugglers Association's Team Championship award. Later that year he launched his professional career when he accepted a contract w ith The Harlem Globetrotters. Barrett's performance was such a success that his contract was extended time and lime again. Three years, five continents, and 30 countries later, he settled in Europe where he worked his solo act for two mure years and teamed to speak French. and Italian. Spanish Portuguese. Since creating The Gizmo Guy s in 1987, Allan and Barrett have proven that they can amaze as well as amuse.
