Show Opinion Page A2 fhae The Summit County Bee It EquaIvgomv Toll Mo About Sheriffs Blotter by Leon Slmlster Fur some lime now I've been stymied about ihe (Utah leaders seem to think) secret exis- tence of polygamy in Utah, and its total lack of equality for its women and children. The Governor and other high-rankin- state officials g d seem to find it a very topic, or else they lack both the ability and the desire to tackle the problem. It's like the body in the deep freeze, as a recent newspaper article described. The old boy died and his - either widow or girlfriend, don't know which - placed him there mainly because she didn't have the money with which to bury him. Well, we all know what would have happened if she'd just left him on the couch; the same thing that occurs on Saturday when, Friday, you forgot to put your garbage cart out. Right, the neighbors give you those disgusted, wrinkly-nose- d looks as they walk by it in front of your house. It seems as if those officials who hold the legal keys necessary to right some of the w rongs about polygamy, also have great skill in Ihe wearing of blinders, nose plugs and Rhinoskin hides. But the smell is still there, and if they have ever taken a few minutes to really ponder the problem, they could not possibly ignore the fact that both state and federal laws prohibit a man (or woman, for that matter) from having more than one spouse at the same lime. Apparently the Guv's brother. Juah County Prosecutor. David Leavitt, did think the thing through and is now in the process of easily-ignore- bringing a mjle polsgamisl to couit on those chjigcs. While one legislature Kcp. David Zolman. who ma have been working with glue too long) esen sponsored a bill to legalize the pi acute of polygamy. Shades of StaichtNid! Utah's promise to end polsgamy was Ihe big deciding factor that granted us that status way baik in We had to promise that we'd quit doing all those funny little things about our society marrying half a dozen or so women (some ol 'em relatives) and live like the rest of the folks in the good ol' U S. of A., who only had one mate. First thing you know, il we Utahns keep carrying on like this 1 mean the ignoring part of it then the whole country will start thinking our wind's no belter than what's coming out of the White House Gang. In my opinion I think that ihe real inequality of the whole scenario is Ihe damage that il is doing lu Ihe children of these polygamist groups. They are shown a way of life that they think is proper and that they should perpetuate. It's like throwing an anvil to a drowning man. How would children ever 18. d -- -- possibly determine right from wrong, and ever he aware of the fact they do have a choice, when it is the only system they have ever known from their moment of birth. And is a system to which, from all released reports, they are literally enslaved. They arc destined to be insulated from outside influences which would educate them to the point that they might he inclined to think there are other choices for them. The recent Kingston cult trial produced evidence that children of these mjinjgcs wcic literally prohibited troin winking at any outside employment, and weie customarily forced into selective mjrruges. some of them incestual. In the meantime the male-dominat- (hierarchy) society of polygamists, exploiting tree family labor, banked megabucks. The Salt hike Tribune reported one polygamist group's fortune at 1 SO million. It'd make a little more sense in terms of equality il the female half of these arrangements got any of the $$$. but it seems they get only food, clothing and shelter (same as any prisoner gets) and the real money goes back into the empire for the 1 guaranteed continuance of the species. But the "legalizing" idea? Duh. Pure folly. They'd have a better chance with plain, dumb luck at Wendover. No. I think now that we've got some smoke signals from other gubernatorial challengers, and hopefully more legislative hopefuls for upcoming offices, maybe, just maybe somebody will have the guts to start an bill that will bring equality to those unfortunate humans w ho are run - but are d into thinking they are now being treated equally by their polygamist masters. I have said before, that MY Mother is the best in the World. Thai still stands as she truly exemplifies the important qualities in my life. She has been such a great example to our enure family as she prepared meals, worked in the yard, read to us. completed her church callings with dignity, laughed with us and loved our father completely. Although my three sisters and I may not have always chosen the paths Mom thought we would, it seems as if we have all gained so much from her and have inherited some of her qualities and mannerisms. She can grow a flower from a slick, fix a meal out of meager fixin's, smile at nature's beauty, and love the grandchildren with all her heart. I really love her with all my heart and wish her a Happy Mothers Day and many more. As for myself. I continually wonder what my sons will remem- ber about me. As long as they remember that their Mom will love them forever, that is all that I care about. From time to time, they will remind me of the kooky things I have done, as only children can do, prohahly to keep me humble. Looking back over my years of Motherhood. I feel so blessed.
