The creation of BYUTV is one is positioning itself way KBYU-Tto take advantage of the opportunities that the imminent conversion to digital television will provide. The digital conversion will likely result in more space in the broadcast spectrum for stations, and in more choices for consumers. We are now looking at multiple programming strands in a digital world Within the next 18 months, we may have four different stations to program." says Reim. While the broadcasts will be all which is a dramatic imdigital provement from the standard NTSC broadcast all programming will not necessarily be in television or HDTV," says Reim. While most stations will probably sched-uics-i- ir broadcast their prime-tim- e HDTV uses the entire bandwidth high-audi-o, thats the real high-entheatrical quality broadcast but that's probably only in prime time, when you're showing films that have been made specifically for that genre. The rest of the time, it will be standard definition television, which uses less bandwidth. You can put four standard definition signals in the same space that an HDTV signal occupies. Reim says multiple programming strands will allow for more narrow-castin- g, to meet the needs of specific audiences. It will also facilitate which broadcasts, would be particularly useful in providing educational materials to student audiences, whether they are studying on campus or participating curriculum. in a distance-learnin- g While restructuring the technical aspects of the station and upgrading hardware is one challenge, Reim says the new network also requires a new economic model to sustain it. Unlike public television stations, which rely heavily on membership dollars to purchase programming, BYUTV will be broadcast to an audience that already pays a subbut scriber rate to Dish Network none of those subscriber funds come back to BYUTV. In fact, unlike commercial stations like ESPN and TBS that are paid for programming, public service television stations are actually required to pay the service provider (in this case. Dish Network) to help offset some of the distribution costs. As a result, Reim says BYUTV will, for now, be a revenue consuming not revenue entity. producing It is truly a public service to help extend the reach of the university. We want to take the richness of Brigham Young University and bring it to a national audience. We feel that this station can make a positive difference in. many people's lives, says Reim.
