The U.S. Wild Horse and Burro program was created 25 years ago to keep the animals from starving to death by capturing and then offering them up for adoption But the Associated Press traced 57 horses captured by the BLM since September that were sold to slaughterhouses. To Kill Coyotes SALT LAKE CITY — Officials from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources want to hunt and shoot coyotes by helicopter and airplane within wilderness study areas in the Book Cliffs. DWR game managers say the mule deer population has been declining in the Book Cliffs and they argue that coyotes are preying on fawns. Wildlife and wilderness advocates are asking the federal Bureau of Land Management not to approve the plan that would take place on federal lands. The role of predators on deer populations has been blown out of proportion, says Craig Axford, Utah Cougar Coalition. Axford says the deer population would rebound if fewer human hunters were allowed to kill deer in the area. Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt warned officials from the Golden State that they should not depend on the Colorado for more water than they are legally entitled to — something California has been doing for years. Montana River of Stink MIAMI — What some scientists believe may be an underground waterway — an ancient subterranean river — may be a pollution pipeline flowing Bay and the Gulf of into Florida Mexico. Researchers at the University of Miami say the underground river may be bringing phosphorous-rich water from the region of Lake Okeechobee to the gulf. Huge algae colonies are feeding on the phosphorous, strangling normal marine life. The theory, if true, could greatly complicate the task of naturalists who want to draft a plan to restore the South Florida environment.
