Rappaport News Bulletin — The King of Sweden has just denounced the Winter Games, saying, “The Olympics Suck.” It's true, King Carl XVI Gustaf was quoted in Sweden’s largest newspaper, Dagens Nyheter. Ym pretty sure that’s how they quoted the king. This is harsh talk, because in Sweden, the word “sucks” means something really nasty and usually is not heard in polite society. Not to mention the fact that skiing was actually invented in Sweden in the year 1106 by a guy named Alf Skign. So when King Carl said “the Olympics suck,” he must have been pretty pissed off — or angry, as they say in Sweden. Unless, of course, they are really mad, then they might say, “pissed off.” But let me make clear that the King never said “pissed off’ — at least not publicly, anyway. Of course, all this came as a great shock here, in Utah. The last thing we expected was to have the king of our competition for the 2002 Winter say, Games come out and “the Olympics suck.” To put it into perspective, that would be like the president of the LDS Church saying something like: “Flip the Olympics.” Yikes! That would be harsh language. A lot of people in Utah have refrained from being critical of Salt Lake City’s bid to capture the Winter Olympic Games, because to do so would be like criticising Motherhood and Apple Pie. But in Sweden, skiing and ski jumping and all that stuff really is Motherhood and Apple Pie. Except that in Sweden the equivalent of “Motherhood and Apple Pie” is “Motherhood and Vodka.” Apples being relatively scarce up there. At any rate, Utah has been abuzz with King Carl’s comments, wondering how they will play as the clock ticks down to the June announcement by the International Olympic Committee on which city actually will host the 2002 Games. Will King Carl’s comments help Salt Lake get the bid? Our Olympic boosters say that if PAGE anyone im Utah — even one person living under the viaduct — says one bad thing about the Winter Olympics, Salt Lake could loose the bid. So, if King Carl says “the Olympics suck,” then Sweden’s chances could be all washed up — meaning that it looks all the brighter for us to get the Games. So, if someone in Quebec, Canada or Sion, Switzerland — the other two cities in the bidding for the 2002 Games — were to come out and say, “the Olympics suck,” then Utah would have it in the bag. The danger, of course, is that if naysayers in the Salt Lake area were heard saying, “the Olympics suck,” or “flip the Olympics,” then our chances might be hurt. And if they started a movement, where people were to spread the word — or in this case, the words, “Flip the Olympics” — it could really have a detrimental impact. If, one-by-one, people all over Utah began repeating: “Flip the Olympics, flip the Olympics” then the IOC might hear it and not give Utah the bid. It is the dreaded “Flip The Olympics Movement.” A terrifying thought. Unless, of course, that theory is all wrong. In which case, we should just keep bribing the IOC and hope for the best. 9 For Leasing Information Call 322-3120 Annabel Bentley |
