President of Skywest Airlines visited Vernal last week to do more of the ground work for the Skywest takeover of air service to Vernal when Frontier Airlines pulls out February 28th. According to Atkins, Skywest will be taking over March 1., 1982 with increased flights in and out of Vernal and lower prices for all travelers and commuters to enjoy. A normal one way flight from Vernal on Frontier costs 88 and Skywest is planning to offer the flight from Vernal to Salt Lake for just 36 or round trip for 104. which definately makes air travel a lot more attractive. Skywest Airlines was founded in St. George by Ralph Atkins;. an attorney there, about te'n years years ago. In 1975. Ralph contacted Jerry, his nephew, who was working as a Certified Public Accountant in Salt Lake at the time, and told him that his business had grown and he could use Jerry's assistance. Jerry liked the idea and moved to St. George and took over as President of Skywest Airlines in 1975. Jerry Atkins was the' youngest airline President in the United States when he took over that position. He was 26 at the time. During his first year as President of the fast growing airlines. Jerry led his company to a gross of just under 1.000.000 during his first yearas head of thecompany. Last year Skywest Airlines under the direction of Jerry Atkins grossed just about 7.000,000. At this time, Skywest Airlines serves eight cities and are in four states. When Skywest officially takes over the Vernal air run, the company will then be serving 10 cities and in five states. Skywest is currently serving st. (ieorge. Utah; Las Vegas, Nevada; Salt take City. Utah; Cedar City, Utah; Page. Arizona; Flagstaff, Arizona; Phoenix. Arizona: and Pocatello. Idaho, and with the addition of the new service to Vernal, they will also be adding Rock Springs. Wyoming. NEWSPRINT asked Mr. Atkins about the requirements his company places on their pilots and how a person becomes a pilot with Skywest. He said. "All of our pilots are competely trained pilots with all of the proper credentials before thay would even be considered for a job with Skywest and all of our pilots start out as a pilot of one of our six passenger single engine planes, then after they serve in that position for a time they are made a copilot of a Mclroliner. Then he added, "they are moved to the Pilot on Command position of one of our nine passenger airplanes and then a pilot could be promoted to Captain of his own Mctroliner." Atkins added that since Skywest was founded ten years ago. three of the captains have been with them and the least newest captain had been with the company for five years. Several of their pilots have logged over 10.000 flight hours. When the pool committee was formed from among the 80 or so citizens at a public hearing in August of last year, there were high hopes of generating private funding for the new pool. Several fund-raise- rs were sponsored by the committee. Those and several large contributions. including 5000 from Gary Energy, have totaled just over I0.000. Roosevelt City has that its bonding capacity for the pool could not amount to more than 500,000. That amount plus a total estimated from said private sources of 25.000 would barely pay for an outdoor pool. Early on in the pool discussions, a commun- -. ity survey was conducted and the desire of most of those polled tended toward a year-rou- nd indoor facility.
