Carolyn Watson, Diet Center Counselor, is in charge of the Diet Center located here in Vernal. Carolyn, born and raised in Idaho, is an expert in nutrition and weight loss. She spent a couple of years teaching Nutrition Classes in Southern Utah and has worked with the dietician at Utah State University. Just before she opened the Diet Center office in Vernal, she attended an instructional training program put on by Diet Center, Inc., where a counselor is educated in Nutrition, Counseling Techniques, will learn to figure nutritional values of food and eat accordingly. As a person progresses in the Diet Center Program they learn to eat differently and in a system that is virtually painless. You are given vitamin supplements that you take that keep you from craving food and you can use many, many dishes from the Diet Center Cookbook, a cookbook that is designed for you to use the whole time you are on the program and even after if you wish. I asked Carolyn to give me an example of the type of daily of food I could expect if I was to join the program. She said, "Well, this is just an example of what you should eat and remember, this is out of my head, not out of a book, but I feel it is a good example of a daily menu, to start off in the morning with a cup of warm lemon juice, your vitamins and a cup of water, then maybe an orange and a bran muffin. Growers Benefit From New Barley Barley growers who want to take advantage of the added protein yield afforded the new Bracken variety should soon be lining up their seed. Jim Bushnell. extension agronomist. Utah State University, noted that there is quite a bit of the seed available in Utah for this coming growing season, but the supply is limited. Plant breeder Dr. Rulon Albrechtsen. professor of agronomy, USU. pointed to the protein yield advantage of this new barley variety released last year by the Utah Agricultural Exper- iment Station. He said. During the 1980 crop year the Bracken variety averaged nearly two percantage points higher in protein than Steptoe when grown under comparable at. five .conditions locations in the state. Bracken averaged 1.72 percent protein while Steptoe averaged 9.9 percent.
