Show Warm Water Drawing Fish Into Shore Earlier Than Normal This Year (Editor's Note: The drought will provide challenges and some interesting opportunities and advantages to Utah's anglers this year. This is the second in a scries of "Wildlife News" articles aimed at helping anglers take advantage of the drought.) May is the month to fish reservoirs in Utah this year, especially if you like fishing from shore. The drought has lowered the water level at many of these waters," said Tom Pettcngill, sport fisheries coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. That has caused the water temperature along shore to warm to the point that trout arc already coming into shore to feed. We're receiving reports of good fishing at Sleinaker. Red Meet. East Canyon. Jordanelle. Deer Creek and other waters across the state." Pettcngill defines a water as any water between 4.500 and 6.5(X) feel in elevation. When water levels are closer to normal, water temperatures in the shallow, shoreline areas arc still fairly cool in That may not be early and the case this year. Don't wail." Pettcngill said, (lei out and fish these waters now." In addition to trout, warming water along shore is also drawing in perch, bass, walleyes and other warm water fish earlier than normal this year. Pettcngill says afternoons and evenings are the best link's to fish right now, because that's when the water along shore has wanned to its best feeding temperature for fish. As it gets wanner in May. early mornings will be best. As May progresses. water will cool during the night and by morning it will he the perfect tempeialure for fish to feed in." As water temperatures climb in June, trout and other fish will swim away from shore, leaving fewer fish for shoreline anglers to catch. As water levels drop during the summer. however, shoreline anglers cun still enjoy great fishing at some of the smaller waters, if link their fishing right. they There will he a period w lien the deeper water will be cool enough that ilk fish w ill he feeding actively and ilk' diopping water level will concentrate them into a smaller space," he said. "These actively feeding, concentrated fish are fairly ; Migratory Bird and Wetlands Set For May and June water temperature reaches 65 to 70 degrees. By the lime it reaches the 70s, trout arc very stressed and they won't eat much," he said. "The same h thing happens to walleyes, bass, perch and many other wamt water fish, when the water temperature hits about KO degrees. When water temperatures climb later in the summer, Pettcngill encourages anglers to climb higher in elevation to fish. One of the keys to fishing during a drought is moving higher in elevation as water temperatures warm." Pettengill said. Gtkid fishing is always available. It's just a matter of fishing the right spot at the right time." Spring has arrived and so have thousands of birds that are visiting Utah's wetland during their annual spring migration.
