Fittingly, the timing of this event perfectly dovetails with the spiritual emphasis of the Christmas season. Imagine the effect as the world totaled and each time-zon- e lit up in succession at the appointed hour. Well, maybe the ability to actually see lighted candles from that distance would be a little too much to expect. But the comfort, solace and spiritual awareness of those lighting the candles, as well as of those for whom they were lit, certainly as being very apparent weighed-i- n and very rewarding to all A) involved. Take for example. Monday Mornings Power Outage. Was I ready and prepared for such an undertaking? Absolutely not. I was speaking with someone and said "If this is a sign of what Y2K is going to be. I am in trouble. Their comment was-hec- k with Y2K, I just need to be more prepared period." TRUI;!!! I got up extra early on Monday to arrive at work because 1 knew I had a lot of work to do. Right in the middle of curling my hair-ogoes the power. So. did I panic? Nope! I just thought That's ok", I'll just comb it and put on my makeup when I get to Coalville. Plus, since I couldn't get any gas at Grumps, I knew Coalville would have plenty. The first thing I noticed after exiting toward Coalville was that the Holiday Hills gas station wasn't lit up like it always is. Then It dawned on me I was in trouble, for there weren't any lights anywhere. The office was dark, cold and without the power, there certainly wasn't going to be any computer service available. When the sun started coming up, I was able to go through some papers on my desk which had been getting ignored, but it just wasn't getting any warmer, so, off I went to see what the schools were doing. What I found was CONTROL. The students were thrilled with the ff thought that they just might get to go home and get the day off. (which they did). The teachers were conducting their classes with as much normalcy as possible and the office personnel were trying their best to allow students access to the two working (call out only) phone lines. Next, it was off to the district office where they were waiting to hedr just how long the power would be off so they could make a call about the school situation. A Kindergarten teacher was there and commented that her situation was minor because out of 24 students, only 3 students came to school because their parents had kept them home. Orderly" was how I would best describe the conduct of those involved with keeping the students calm, getting the bus situation under control and taking the situation in hand. My hat is off to those who did such a great job. Next. I went to the Court House, w here I found lots of people milling around in their respective offices, trying to keep busy, but not really able to do anything, with all their modern technological system's" in shut down mode. It didn't take long for the Commissioner's to make the decision to send home all non crucial departments, after hearing the power would he off for at least 3 to 4 hours. I must admit, I went home for a few hours then myself, before returning to the office when the power can back on. Yes. I do take the power system for granted, but I hope I learned something from this experience. One of them being to take to heart the advice my Dad gave me years ago. So, major power outage hit the Eastern side of Summit County causing the North Summit School A District to send their students home for the day, as well as the employees of the Summit County Courthouse. The outage hit just after 7:00 a.m. and was out until approximately 12 noon, leaving a number of residents unprepared. Businesses were closed, due to non use of equipment such as computers, heating systems, and lights, which caused a number of modem technological problems. It also let many people know they should be a little more prepared for such situations. According to a Utah Power official the outage was caused from a two-fol- d problem. That didn't work this time as both lines-on- e near Wanship and another at Henefcr had trouble. All clues so far lead to weather causing a line to go down near the Rockport Reservoir region, which caused one problem. A driving the line crew then went into action to locate any other problems and one was found in a jumper" line (wires that are tied together to connect lines from both sides of the pole and anchored") that was burned at the Hcnefer station. The job was a compound one that took longer to fix than originally anticipated" said the official. As soon as the Henefer line was up and running we were able to connect through one line enabling people to get power while we fixed the line problem near Wanship. TIRE WARRANTY UNSURPASSED!
